Ceuzany Pires: Cape Verde’s Rising Voice Against Domestic Violence
On a breezy May evening in Mindelo, the cultural heart of São Vicente island, singer‑songwriter Ceuzany Pires took the stage barefoot, arms raised, and delivered a powerful rendition of her latest single “No tchal te li” (“We Stop Here”). The song, which addresses the trauma of domestic violence, prompted several women in the audience to join her in singing the chorus, turning the performance into a spontaneous anthem of solidarity.
From Family Roots to the Stage
Ceuzany’s connection to music began early. She told AFP that she started singing at age 12 during a local competition in Cape Verde and has never stopped performing since.1 Her passion was nurtured by her grandmother, who, despite familial opposition, sang serenades at home and passed on her love of melody to her granddaughter.
“My grandmother had dreamed of becoming a well‑known artist in Cape Verde, but her parents didn’t want her to sing,” Ceuzany explained. “She always sang serenades at home and I always listened. It is thanks to her that I have this taste for music and that I love singing very much.”1
Musical Style and Influences
Ceuzany’s sound blends traditional Cape Verdean genres with contemporary influences. She is frequently compared to the legendary Cesária Évora, the “barefoot diva” who popularized morna and coladeira worldwide.2 Producer José Da Silva, who has worked with both artists, notes that Ceuzany “is able to give coladeira a bit of rap” and feels comfortable collaborating with urban as well as traditional musicians.2
Her fourth album, released in 2023, features a rich palette of instruments—saxophone, percussion, cavaquinho, acoustic piano, ukulele, and zouk rhythms—showcasing her versatility across jazz, slam, and Afro‑Caribbean styles.3 Tracks range from lush, orchestral arrangements to stripped‑down voice‑and‑piano pieces, allowing her emotive timbre to shine.
Addressing Domestic Violence Through Art
The album’s title track, “No tchal te li,” is a personal statement. Ceuzany revealed that she endured a toxic relationship for nearly five years before finding the strength to leave.1 The song narrates the progression from romance to physical and emotional abuse, ultimately evolving into a call for liberation.
Following the release, Ceuzany received numerous messages from survivors and began collaborating with local women’s support groups. She frames the song as an empowerment anthem, stating:
“I believe that women deserve to be treated like queens. This is the message I want to share with all women in Cape Verde and around the world, because if I managed to end a toxic relationship, you can do it too.”
Her advocacy extends beyond the studio; she regularly participates in community workshops that educate young people about healthy relationships and provides a platform for survivors to share their stories.
International Recognition and Collaborations
Ceuzany’s talent has attracted attention beyond the archipelago. In 2022, French singer‑songwriter Christophe Maé discovered her during a visit to Cape Verde and recorded the duet “Le Pays des merveilles” (“Wonderland”), an uplifting tribute to her homeland.4 The following year, she joined Maé on a 40‑day tour across France, performing in venues ranging from intimate clubs to larger concert halls.
Domestically, her work was honored at the 2024 Cape Verde Music Awards, where she won the Traditional Music of the Year category.5 Critics praised the album for its authentic blend of heritage and modernity, highlighting tracks that feature the cavaquinho alongside electronic beats.
Looking Ahead
Ceuzany remains focused on expanding her artistic reach while staying rooted in her community. She has expressed intentions to:
- Record additional albums that explore new sonic territories.
- Continue advocating for survivors of domestic violence through music and outreach.
- Promote Cape Verdean culture on international stages.
- Mentor emerging artists from Mindelo and other islands.
After her Mindelo concert, she greeted fans with hugs before disappearing into the windy night, a reminder that her music—barefoot, heartfelt, and unapologetically honest—continues to resonate both locally and abroad.
