Another Tragic Crash in KwaZulu‑Natal

Saturday’s Head‑On Collision

A day before the Mpumalanga incident, six people died in a head‑on collision between two Volkswagen Polo cars on the R34 Memel Road near Newcastle. The crash happened between 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Details of the Incident

  • One Polo caught fire after the impact.
  • Two occupants of the first vehicle were trapped and burned to death.
  • Four occupants of the second vehicle also died.
  • One survivor was taken to hospital.

Ndabezinhle Sibiya from the KwaZulu‑Natal Department of Transport and Human Settlements said the Road Traffic Inspectorate is examining the crash, noting that it is suspected that two victims in the first Polo died instantly.

Investigation and Road Safety

Both accidents are under investigation. Authorities are looking at factors such as speed, vehicle condition, and road layout. In the meantime, officials urge drivers to:

  • Keep a safe distance from large trucks.
  • Stay alert for sudden stops or debris on the road.
  • Avoid distractions like mobile phones while driving.
  • Ensure vehicles are roadworthy, especially brakes and tires.

Conclusion

These back‑to‑back tragedies highlight how quickly a routine drive can turn deadly. While investigations continue, the best way to honor those lost is for every road user to prioritize safety, follow traffic rules, and remain vigilant behind the wheel. Staying cautious can help prevent further loss of life on South Africa’s roads.
