Former GFA president urges Ghana to retain Carlos Queiroz as Black Stars coach

Former GFA President Urges Continuity with Carlos Queiroz After World Cup Exit

Following Ghana’s Round of 32 defeat to Colombia at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Dr. Nyaho Nyaho‑Tamakloe, former president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has publicly appealed for the retention of head coach Carlos Queiroz. In his statement, Nyaho‑Tamakloe argued that another coaching change would disrupt the nascent progress made under the Portuguese tactician and called for a long‑term reconstruction plan centred on stability.

Who Is Nyaho Nyaho‑Tamakloe?

Nyaho‑Tamakloe served as GFA president from 2005 to 2009 and has been a vocal figure in Ghanaian football administration for over three decades. His experience includes overseeing the Black Stars’ qualification for the 2006 and 2010 World Cups and advocating for youth development programmes. This background gives him both the experience and authority to comment on the structural needs of the national team.

Queiroz’s Impact on the Black Stars

Under Queiroz, Ghana reached the knockout stage of a World Cup for the first time since 2010, a milestone highlighted by FIFA’s technical report on the 2026 tournament (FIFA, 2026). The Portuguese coach introduced a more disciplined defensive shape while retaining the team’s traditional attacking flair. Despite the loss to Colombia, Queiroz’s tenure has been credited with improving tactical cohesion and player morale.

The Case for Continuity

Nyaho‑Tamakloe warned that frequent coaching changes hinder long‑term planning. He pointed to the example of Morocco, whose sustained investment in youth football and stable technical leadership have produced consistent continental and global performances (CAF Technical Study Group, 2023). Retaining Queiroz, he argued, would provide the stability needed to build on the recent World Cup breakthrough.

Structural Reforms Beyond the Coach

The former GFA president stressed that the Black Stars’ challenges extend beyond the sideline. He outlined several areas requiring urgent attention:

  • Grassroots development: Expanding school‑based football programmes and increasing access to quality coaching in rural communities.
  • Talent identification: Implementing a nationwide scouting network linked to regional academies, similar to the model used by Senegal’s Diambars Institute.
  • Administrative governance: Strengthening transparency within the GFA to foster trust among clubs, players, and fans.
  • Infrastructure: Upgrading training facilities and ensuring pitches meet international standards to reduce injury risk.

These measures, Nyaho‑Tamakloe noted, are essential for creating a pipeline of players capable of sustaining competitive squads for future Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup campaigns.

Reviving Ghana’s Traditional Style

Nyaho‑Tamakloe also called for a return to the aggressive, entertaining brand of football that characterized Ghana’s sides of the 1990s and early 2000s. He urged coaches and technical directors to encourage expressive play while maintaining defensive discipline—a balance he believes Queiroz is capable of achieving with the right support.

Looking Ahead

With the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers on the horizon and the next World Cup cycle beginning in 2027, Nyaho‑Tamakloe’s appeal underscores a broader consensus among Ghanaian football stakeholders: continuity, coupled with structural reform, offers the best path to restore the Black Stars’ status as a perennial contender on the global stage.
