How to see the status of your automatic SARS assessment on WhatsApp

Date:

SARS Automatic Assessment Period Ends – What You Need to Know

The automatic assessment window for South African taxpayers closed on 12 July 2026. If you were selected for automatic assessment, you should have received a notification via eFiling or the SARS MobiApp to confirm your pre‑filled tax details. Those who missed the window can still file their income tax return manually using the SARS MobiApp or eFiling platform.

How Many Were Assessed Automatically?

During the first days of the filing season, SARS processed automatic assessments for roughly 1.9 million taxpayers. Within 72 hours, about R8 billion in tax refunds were paid out, showing the efficiency of the automated system.

Checking Your Auto‑Assessment Status on WhatsApp

SARS provides a quick WhatsApp service to verify whether you were automatically assessed. Follow these steps:

  1. Save the SARS WhatsApp number

    • Add 0800‑11‑7277 to your contacts.
  2. Start a chat

    • Open WhatsApp, find the new contact, and send a simple greeting such as “Hello”.
  3. Select the assessment option

    • When the menu appears, choose “Choose an option”, then tap “Evaluate status automatically” and press Send.
  4. Provide personal data for verification

    • Enter your ID or passport number.
    • Enter your tax reference number.
  5. Receive your status
    • Once SARS verifies your details, the chat will display your automatic assessment status (e.g., “Assessed”, “Pending”, or “Not selected”).

Dealing with High Traffic on eFiling

If you attempt to access eFiling and encounter delays due to heavy user volume, SARS advises:

  • You may need to wait for full site access.
  • While waiting, you can view your auto‑assessment information in read‑only mode and use limited eFiling features.
  • Full functionality returns once traffic subsides. This option is available only to individual eFiling users.

What to Do If You Were Not Automatically Assessed

  • File manually using the SARS MobiApp or eFiling.
  • Ensure you have all required documents (IRP5/IT3(a) certificates, medical aid statements, retirement annuity contributions, etc.).
  • Submit your return before the final deadline to avoid penalties and interest.

Conclusion

The automatic assessment phase has ended, but SARS still offers convenient tools—WhatsApp, the MobiApp, and eFiling—to help you confirm your status and file your tax return. By saving the SARS WhatsApp number and following the simple verification steps, you can quickly learn whether you were automatically assessed. If you need to file manually, act promptly and keep your documentation ready to stay compliant and avoid unnecessary charges. Stay informed, use the available channels, and complete your tax obligations with confidence.
