Senegalese Football Federation Addresses Coaching Controversy After World Cup Exit
In early July 2024, the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) confirmed the departure of head coach Pape Thiaw following the team’s exit from the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The decision came after a period of strained relations between the coach and the federation’s leadership, centering on contract negotiations and salary expectations.
Background on the Coaching Appointment
Pape Thiaw, aged 45, was appointed as Senegal’s head coach in March 2024. Prior to his senior national team role, Thiaw guided the side to victory in the 2022 African Nations Championship (CHAN) held in Algeria. That triumph, however, was later overturned by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) due to eligibility concerns, prompting Senegal to lodge an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
The FSF, led by President Augustin Senghor, initially expressed confidence in Thiaw’s ability to build on the continental success and prepare the squad for the World Cup in Qatar.
World Cup Performance and Subsequent Tensions
At the 2022 World Cup, Senegal topped Group A with wins over Qatar and Ecuador and a loss to the Netherlands, securing a place in the round of 16. The team’s run ended there with a 3‑0 defeat to England. Despite the achievement of reaching the knockout stage, reports emerged shortly after the tournament that Thiaw had requested a significant salary increase.
According to a statement released by the FSF on 2 July 2024, President Senghor explained that the request created a breakdown in trust:
“There has been a loss of trust between Pape Thiaw and us. After his demand for more money it was initially not possible to sign a new contract, and despite efforts to resolve the matter, we concluded that a change in leadership was in the best interest of the team.”
The federation added that Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye had intervened earlier in the year to persuade Thiaw to withdraw a threat to boycott the World Cup travel plans, but the underlying contractual dispute remained unresolved.
