New Zealander Ryan Fox wins the exciting British Open on the last hole

Ryan Fox Claims Maiden British Open Title at Royal Birkdale

On Sunday, 21 July 2024, New Zealand golfer Ryan Fox secured his first major championship by winning the 154th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale in England. Fox carded a final‑round 68 to finish at 9‑under‑par 270, edging out American Cameron Young by a single stroke.

How the Victory Unfolded

Entering the final day, overnight leader Sam Burns held a two‑shot advantage over a tightly packed leaderboard. Burns began the round with a bogey‑free front nine, but a series of pars and a dropped shot on the 12th left him vulnerable.

Cameron Young, who had started the day tied for 20th, produced a stunning 64 (‑6) to move into the clubhouse lead at 9‑under. Young finished his round two hours before Fox and spent the waiting period hitting balls on the range, anticipating a possible playoff.

Fox, meanwhile, had endured a turbulent back nine on Saturday, carding a record‑tying 62 (‑8) before a brief slump on the turn. He regained composure with four birdies over his final six holes, setting up a decisive moment on the 18th.

The Closing Birdie

After a tee shot that found the fairway bunker on the par‑5 17th, Fox managed only a par. The 18th hole—a demanding, dog‑leg left stretching 465 yards—required a birdie to force a playoff or claim victory outright.

Fox’s drive landed safely in the middle of the fairway. His second shot, a crisp 7‑iron, flew to within 20 feet of the pin. With thousands of spectators lining the dunes, he struck the putt confidently, watching the ball disappear into the centre of the cup.

The birdie gave Fox a 68 for the round and a total of 270 (‑9), enough to hold off Young’s 271 (‑8) and Sam Burns’ 272 (‑7).

Historical Significance

Fox’s triumph makes him only the second New Zealander to win the Open Championship, following Bob Charles’ victory at Royal Lytham in 1963. At 39 years old, Fox joins an elite group of golfers who have captured their first major after turning 35.

According to the R&A official leaderboard, Fox’s final round featured:

  • 4 birdies (holes 13, 14, 15, 18)
  • 1 bogey (hole 12)
  • 13 pars

Young’s closing 64 included eight birdies and no bogeys, a performance praised by commentators as “one of the finest final‑round charges in recent Open history” (BBC Sport).

Notable Performances

Sam Burns, who began the day at ‑10, finished tied for third with a 68 (‑2) and a total of 272 (‑7). World number one Scottie Scheffler and home favourite Tommy Fleetwood tied for fourth at 273 (‑6).

The leaderboard reflected a fiercely competitive field, with nine players finishing within three strokes of the winner—a testament to the challenging links conditions brought on by shifting winds and firm fairways along the Irish Sea.
