Mthatha businessman charged with attempted murder after police officer shot dead

A 60‑year‑old businessman from Mthatha has been charged with attempted murder after a shooting at a traditional ceremony left an off‑duty police officer injured.

What Happened

On Saturday, July 18, the businessman attended a traditional gathering at Mazizini, Zimbane A/A in Mthatha. While inside a tent, he allegedly discharged a licensed firearm, striking a 39‑year‑old policewoman who was off duty at the time.

Police Response

Captain Welile Matyolo of the Eastern Cape Police said the man turned himself in to Mthatha police around 11 p.m. Officers seized his weapon for forensic analysis and opened a case of attempted murder at Mthatha Central Police Station.

Victim’s Condition

The officer was rushed to a nearby hospital with a gunshot wound to the upper body. Medical staff report that her condition is stable and she is receiving appropriate care.

Investigation and Motive

Authorities have not yet disclosed a motive. Captain Matyolo stated that the reason behind the shooting remains part of an ongoing investigation, and detectives are gathering evidence, witness statements, and ballistic reports.

OR Tambo District Police Commissioner Major General Norman Modishana condemned the act, calling it unacceptable to use violence in a public, cultural setting. He urged the public to cooperate with investigators so that justice can be served.
