The Madlanga Commission hears Suliman Carrim spent more time outside the medical facility than inside

Date:

Madlanga Commission Delays Decision on Suliman Carrim’s Testimony

What’s Happening?

The Madlanga Commission, led by Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, is looking into whether businessman Suliman Carrim should be allowed to postpone his testimony indefinitely. The commission heard arguments from both sides on Friday and decided to wait before making a final call.

Why the Delay?

Justice Madlanga said the decision will be announced later. He wanted to hear more evidence before deciding if Carrim’s health really stops him from giving testimony.

Geolocation Evidence

Lawyer Adila Hassim SC presented data showing Carrim’s movements:

  • He left the medical facility almost every day.
  • On most days he was outside for at least eight hours, sometimes longer.
  • His wife confirmed in an affidavit that the geolocation data accurately reflects his husband’s whereabouts.

This information suggests Carrim may not be as ill as claimed.

Carrim’s Legal Team Responds

Lawyer Kameel Premhid, representing Carrim, argued that the postponement is a medical issue, not a question of where Carrim has been. He said:

  • The CCTV footage the commission wants to use is irrelevant.
  • Carrim’s health prevents him from testifying, so an indefinite stay is needed.

Premhid also noted that while August 14 was once suggested as a possible return date, Carrim now seeks an open‑ended delay.

What’s Next?

The commission adjourned and will reconvene on Monday at 9:30 a.m. Attorney Andrea Johnson is expected to testify then. After hearing her, the commission will finally announce whether Carrim can keep his testimony on hold or must appear.

Conclusion

The case hinges on two competing stories: geolocation data that shows Carrim moving freely outside the medical facility, and his lawyers’ insistence that his health stops him from testifying. Teens following the news can see how technology (like phone location tracking) can play a big role in legal decisions. The Madlanga Commission will weigh all the evidence before making a fair ruling, and we’ll know their verdict soon.
