Malawi Launches Its First Utility‑Scale Battery Energy Storage System
On Friday, the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) commissioned a 20 MW/40 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at Kanengo in Lilongwe. The facility marks the country’s first large‑scale storage installation and is intended to bolster the stability, reliability, and flexibility of Malawi’s national electricity grid.
Project Funding and Partners
The $20.245 million initiative was funded by the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP). Implementation involved a collaboration between the Government of Malawi, ESCOM Ltd, and GEAPP, with technical expertise supplied by JIVO and Lahmeyer International.
GEAPP also announced a complementary effort to establish the Southern Africa Battery Energy Storage Systems Center of Excellence at Mzuzu University, in partnership with the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences. The centre will deliver training, research, and knowledge‑sharing activities for utilities, policymakers, researchers, and private‑sector stakeholders.

Energy Minister Jean Sendeza Mathanga highlighted that the BESS aligns with the nation’s long‑term development blueprint, Malawi 2063. She stated:
“For decades we have been at the mercy of the clock and the weather, but today we begin an era of energy independence on our own terms. Today we are not just commissioning a steel and lithium plant, we are commissioning the engine of our development.”
She emphasized that reliable electricity is a prerequisite for industrialisation, noting that “there is no industrialisation without stable, reliable and affordable energy.”

The storage facility is projected to deliver several tangible advantages:
- Improved grid frequency regulation, reducing the risk of blackouts.
- Greater integration of variable renewable sources, such as solar and wind, by storing excess output for later use.

- Support for ESCOM’s efforts to minimise load‑shedding through better operational performance and stakeholder communication.
Chief Minister Justin Saidi welcomed the progress, noting that ESCOM’s enhanced communication and operational practices are already contributing to a more predictable power supply.

GEAPP Vice President Koech underscored the value of public‑private partnerships in advancing clean energy infrastructure:
“The battery storage project shows the value of partnerships between governments and development organisations. It demonstrates how targeted financing can catalyse technology deployment that strengthens national grids.”
She added that the forthcoming Center of Excellence will help build local expertise, ensuring that Malawi can operate, maintain, and innovate within the battery storage sector for years to come.
