Traffic Alert: N3 Route Expected to Be Packed
As the Easter weekend and school holidays wrap up, the N3 toll route between Cedara (KwaZulu-Natal) and Heidelberg (Gauteng) will see a massive surge in returning travelers. Road users should prepare for heavy traffic and rapidly changing weather conditions over the coming days.
Peak Travel Days and Volume
The busiest period is expected from Monday, April 6, continuing into Tuesday. Traffic volumes could reach between 1,500 and 2,500 vehicles per hour. While most traffic flows toward Gauteng, a significant number of vehicles will also be heading toward KwaZulu-Natal.
Driver Fatigue is a Major Risk
Long hours on the road, fading daylight, and stop-start traffic greatly increase driver fatigue. This exhaustion slows reaction times and leads to poor decision-making, making crashes more likely.
The Real Danger: Human Error
Data from 2025 reveals a shocking truth: the vast majority of accidents on the N3 are caused by driver mistakes.
* 83% of light vehicle accidents
* 80% of heavy vehicle accidents
These errors lead to the most severe crashes, including single-vehicle run-offs, head-on collisions from risky overtaking, and multi-vehicle pile-ups during rush hour. Head-on collisions are often fatal or cause life-changing injuries.
Sharing the Road Safely
The mix of vehicles on the road is a key challenge. You’ll share the space with trucks, public transport (like minibus taxis), and holiday-makers, all traveling at different speeds.
* Heavy trucks are legally limited to 80 km/h.
* Local public transport maxes out at 100 km/h (where signs allow).
These speed differences require extra caution from everyone.
Critical Truck Safety Rules
Cutting in front of a heavy truck is extremely dangerous. Trucks need more distance to stop; if you cut them off, they may brake suddenly and lose control or jackknife. Never forget the blind spots—truck drivers cannot see vehicles driving too
