Prosecutor is under fire for allegedly using Cape Town council chambers for a party meeting

h1
Controversy Over Cape Town Council Chamber Use

h2
What Happened?

A video clip released online shows members of the Democratic Alliance (DA) gathering inside the City of Cape Town council chamber. GOOD Party councillor Sandra Dickson called the event a “partisan, motivational meeting.” She pointed out that, at the same time, formal council meetings are still being held virtually.

h2
Why the GOOD Party Is Concerned

  • Transparency: Dickson wants to know who approved the chamber’s use and whether any municipal funds covered costs.
  • Equal Access: She argues that if the DA can book the room for a party event, opposition parties should have the same opportunity.
  • Purpose of the Chamber: Dickson believes the space should primarily host public council business, not private political gatherings.

h2
DA’s Response

The DA says it has always paid the full rental fee for the chamber, covering cleaning, electricity, and other service costs. In a statement, the party noted that any political group can rent the venue, and they provided a photo showing the GOOD Party using the same chamber on 1 February 2025.

h2
What the GOOD Party Is Asking For

  1. Disclosure of who approved the DA’s booking.
  2. Confirmation that the DA paid all venue and service charges.
  3. Details on any municipal resources (security, technical support, staff time) used for the event.
  4. Assurance that opposition parties would receive equal treatment under the same conditions.

h2
Why This Matters to Teens and Residents

  • Fair Play: Public facilities should be accessible to all political groups on equal terms.
  • Trust in Government: Transparent handling of resources builds confidence that officials are not favoring one party.
  • Civic Engagement: When council meetings are open and held in person, residents can see democracy in action and feel more inclined to participate.

h2
Conclusion

The debate over who may use the Cape Town council chamber highlights broader questions about transparency, fairness, and the proper use of public spaces. Until the city provides clear answers about approvals, payments, and resource use, perceptions of unequal treatment will persist. Residents, especially young people looking to engage with local politics, deserve a council chamber that serves the community’s democratic business first and foremost.
