Jabulani Khumalo champions change at African Renaissance Unity launch in Durban

Date:

Overview of the Launch

The African Renaissance Unity (ARU) party held its launch event in Durban on Saturday. Among the guests was Jabulani Khumalo, founder of the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP). The gathering drew former and current councillors, activists, members of Parliament, provincial legislators, and community leaders.

Who Attended

  • Founder of MKP, Jabulani Khumalo
  • ARU leader Siphephile Mahlaba
  • Former and current municipal councillors
  • Activists and members of Parliament
  • Representatives from provincial legislatures

Jabulani Khumalo’s Remarks

Support for Siphephile Mahlaba

Khumalo said he came to back Mahlaba because they worked together when MKP was created and during the effort to get the party into Parliament.

Ongoing Legal Battle

He reminded everyone that the legal fight to reclaim MKP from former president Jacob Zuma is still underway.

Call to Vote

“People must come out and vote with Mahlaba. We are not saying they must leave our membership, but they can vote with him and elect African Renaissance Unity councillors, and then in 2029, we can be together,” Khumalo urged.

About Siphephile Mahlaba and ARU

Background

Before leading ARU, Mahlaba served as secretary‑general of the Afrika Mayibuye Movement, a group linked to Floyd Shivambu.

Vision and Promises

Mahlaba spoke about South Africa’s rich mineral wealth and how most people still live in poverty despite three decades of democracy.

Education and Skills
  • Push for free access to higher education
  • Introduce agricultural and basic technical studies in schools so learners can farm and fix everyday items like taps
Housing and Informal Settlements
  • Convert district municipalities into sub‑legislatures for better service delivery
  • Turn hijacked and abandoned buildings into low‑cost housing units
  • Eradicate informal settlements; many families have lived in temporary shelters for over 11 years
Health and Nurses’ Pay
  • Raise nurses’ salaries so they can afford medical aid
  • Extend operating hours at community clinics
  • Criticise the disparity where politicians enjoy medical aid and blue‑light escorts while frontline health workers struggle
Agriculture in Schools
  • Make farming a part of every village’s routine
  • Address the lack of practical skills caused by the current education system

Fighting Corruption

Mahlaba denounced leaders who chase personal wealth and power, accusing them of abandoning the promises made to the public. He called for a political system that serves all citizens, not just a select few.

Voices from the Party

Thabiso Zulu’s Comments

Anti‑corruption activist and ARU member Thabiso Zulu described Mahlaba as a man of principle, not driven by power or personal gain. Zulu stressed that ARU aims to represent every racial group, rejecting parties that focus only on certain communities. He added:

  • People are tired of reactionary politics that follow media trends.
  • Good policies mean little if they are not put into action.
  • A true “rainbow nation” can only exist when everyone feels included and represented.

Conclusion

The launch of African Renaissance Unity highlighted a desire for fresh leadership that listens to ordinary South Africans. With promises spanning education, housing, health, youth skills, and anti‑corruption, ARU hopes to turn voter support into real change. Whether these ideas become reality will depend on the party’s ability to deliver on its pledges and unite diverse communities behind a common goal.
