SPONSORED PODCAST | An argument for SADC regional integration

Regional Integration Takes Center Stage in Latest Business Day Spotlight Episode

The newest edition of the Business Day Spotlight podcast shines a light on the pivotal role of regional integration for Southern Africa’s economic future. Host Mudiwa Gavaza engages with Khulekani Mathe, Chief Executive Officer of Business Unity South Africa (Busa) and Chair of the SADC Business Council, to discuss how coordinated action across the 16 member states of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) can unlock new growth pathways.

Why SADC Industrialization Week Matters

Mathe highlights the upcoming 9th SADC Industrialization Week, scheduled for July 27–31, 2024 in Durban, South Africa. The event aims to:

  • Examine current economic strategies, challenges, and opportunities within the SADC bloc.
  • Showcase success stories of cross‑border manufacturing and value‑chain development.
  • Facilitate dialogue between policymakers, private‑sector leaders, and development partners.

According to the SADC Secretariat, the combined population of the member states exceeded 300 million in 2023, representing a market larger than many individual economies worldwide (SADC, 2023). This scale offers a compelling foundation for shifting the region from a reliance on raw‑material exports toward a diversified, manufacturing‑driven economy.

Private‑Sector Collaboration as a Catalyst

Mathe argues that private‑sector actors must “join forces” to compete effectively in global supply chains. He points to three levers that can accelerate this transformation:

  1. Policy harmonisation: Aligning customs procedures, standards, and regulatory frameworks reduces transit times and lowers trade costs.
  2. Infrastructure investment: Public‑private partnerships (PPPs) can mobilise capital for critical transport corridors, energy grids, and digital networks.
  3. Access to regional finance: Leveraging development banks and climate‑finance mechanisms to fund industrial projects that meet sustainability criteria.

These recommendations echo findings from the African Development Bank’s 2022 report on regional value chains, which noted that coordinated infrastructure upgrades could increase intra‑SADC trade by up to 25 % by 2030 (AfDB, 2022).

From Commodity Exporter to Manufacturing Hub

By consolidating the market of over 300 million consumers, SADC has the potential to attract investment in sectors such as agro‑processing, automotive components, and renewable‑energy equipment. Mathe cites the success of the Southern African Power Pool as a precedent: collaborative grid management has already cut electricity costs for participating utilities by an average of 12 % (SAPP, 2021).

He cautions, however, that realizing this vision requires sustained commitment from both governments and businesses. “Integration is not a one‑off event; it is a continuous process of building trust, aligning incentives, and investing in the foundations that enable firms to scale,” Mathe says.
