Why Registration Matters

Voting starts with being on the voters’ roll. If your name isn’t there, you can’t cast a ballot. The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) reminds everyone that registering is the first step to exercising your constitutional right to vote in local government elections.

Key Dates to Remember

• Final registration weekend: Saturday 1 August – Sunday 2 August, 8 am – 5 pm at voting stations nationwide.
• Election date proclamation: Expected right after the registration weekend, once the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs announces the 2026 Local Government Election date.
• Voters’ roll closes: At midnight on the day the election date is proclaimed. After that, no new registrations or address changes can be processed until after the polls.

How to Register or Update Details

If you’ve never registered, moved house, or simply want to check that your address is correct, use this weekend:

1. Visit any of the 23 699 voting stations open across the country.
2. Bring your South African ID book or smart ID card.
3. Fill out the registration form or update your existing details.
4. If you need a new ID, the Department of Home Affairs will align its hours with the IEC’s registration drive to help you get the document you need.

What Happens After the Date Is Set

Once the election date is proclaimed:

• The voters’ roll shuts at midnight – no further registrations or changes.
• All voter‑registration drives stop and the online portal is deactivated.
• The Electoral Code of Conduct kicks in, guiding parties and candidates on fair campaigning.
• Party and independent candidates can begin nominations using the IEC’s Online Candidate Nomination System.
• The IEC will publish an official timetable outlining every step of the election process.

Rules for Candidates and Campaigns

The Electoral Code of Conduct, which comes into force after proclamation, aims to keep the campaign environment tolerant and open. It prohibits “no‑go” zones that restrict free political debate. All party leaders, office bearers, candidates, and independents must follow these rules until the results are announced.
