Ramsamy tells Madlanga Commission of Andrea Johnson’s private meeting with Senzo Mchunu

Date:

What Happened at the Madlanga Commission?

The Private Meeting

The Madlanga Commission heard that former Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) head Advocate Andrea Johnson met Police Minister Senzo Mchunu at his private home on 20 January.
The meeting was described as a “meet and greet,” but it took place away from the office.
Before entering the house, Johnson handed her cellphones to her security guards, so she could not be reached during the visit.

Details of the Encounter

  • Johnson waited with Cedric Nkabinde, Mchunu’s chief of staff, before seeing the minister.
  • She later said the interaction made her feel uneasy, telling the commission that Nkabinde had “given her the heebie‑jeebies.”

What Was Discussed?

Cleaning Up the Police Service

State prosecutor Drushantha Ramsamy told the inquiry that Mchunu spoke about wanting to clean up the South African Police Service, especially the Crime Intelligence division.

Political Killings Task Team Not Raised

Johnson insisted that the controversial Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) was not part of the conversation. She said the talk was only a casual introduction.

Conflicting Statements

Johnson’s Memory

At first Johnson suggested she had never met Mchunu before, but later she acknowledged the January 20 meeting.
She admitted she could not recall every detail of their chat but stood firm that PKTT topics were avoided.

Setting Boundaries

Johnson told the commission that she had informed Mchunu not to call her to meetings because she reports to the Justice Minister, not the Police Minister.

Another Meeting Mentioned

The commission also heard about a separate encounter between Johnson and former Hawks head Lieutenant‑General Godfrey Lebeya.
Johnson said she could not remember all the specifics of that talk either.

Mchunu’s Response

Senzo Mchunu has appeared before the commission and denied the allegations made against him.

Conclusion

The testimony shows a confusing picture: a private, uncomfortable meeting that Johnson says was merely a hello, while prosecutors suggest the minister used the chance to discuss police reforms.
Both sides disagree on what was said, and the commission continues to sort out the facts.
