MK Party names Tshwane candidate days after axing its eThekwini pick

Date:

MK Party Names Annie Matime as Tshwane Mayoral Hopeful

Who Is Annie Matime?

Annie Matime, also called Nkele, has worked in municipal government for more than 20 years. She holds an MBA, an honours degree in geography, and another in theology. Besides her city‑hall experience, she has led community groups, church projects, and development programmes.

Why the MK Party Chose Her

The party says Matime’s mix of professional skills, leadership, and community work makes her a strong choice to run Tshwane under its banner. They believe she can bring fresh ideas and steady management to the metro.

How the Announcement Fits the Party’s Plan

Two weeks ago the MK Party revealed most of its mayoral candidates in Durban, leaving two metro spots open. Matime fills one of those spots for Tshwane. The only metro still without a candidate is Cape Town.

Recent Party Shake‑Ups

Leadership Changes in Durban

Just days before Matime’s unveiling, party leader Jacob Zuma removed Zandile Hlophe‑Mkhwanazi from the eThekwini mayoral race and replaced her with Apostle Mxolisi Phakathi.

Task Team Dissolved

Zuma also disbanded the Presidential Task Team for the second time in six weeks and ordered an inquiry into claims that some nominated councillor names were swapped out on the party’s IEC lists.

Impact on Party Structures

Hlophe‑Mkhwanazi and senior official Sibonelo Maphumulo were taken off the National Party Liaison Committee, the group that handles IEC matters. This left the MK Party without its two representatives on that committee.

Investigation Into Candidate Lists

National spin doctor Sifiso Mahlangu said the party has opened an investigation to “establish the full facts” and hold anyone responsible accountable under party rules. He urged members to unite behind the candidates.

What the Election Looks Like

Nominee names were locked in with the IEC on 28 August, so the party cannot change them now. In the November 4 Tshwane vote, Matime will face:

  • DA’s Cilliers Brink – the former mayor who was ousted in September 2024 after an ANC motion of no confidence.
  • ActionSA’s Nasiphi Moya – the current mayor seeking re‑election.

Conclusion

The MK Party’s pick of Annie Matime shows its effort to put forward experienced leaders in key metros. While internal disputes and investigations continue, the party hopes her background will resonate with voters looking for capable leadership in Tshwane.
