Special Voting Options for South Africa’s 2026 Local Elections
Who Can Apply for a Special Vote?
Registered voters who know they won’t be able to reach their usual polling station on election day can request a special vote. This includes people working in essential services, members of the media, or anyone who will be away from their voting district on November 4, 2026.
Application Deadline
The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has set the cutoff for special‑vote applications at 5 p.m. on Monday, October 12. Applications received after this time will not be processed.
How to Submit Your Application
Online
Visit the IEC website and fill out the special‑vote form.
In Person
Drop off a completed form at any local IEC office. You can ask someone else to hand it in for you.
By SMS (for voting‑station special votes)
Send your identity number to 32249. Each SMS costs R1.
Note: the IEC does **not** accept applications by email or fax.
Two Types of Special Votes
Home‑Visit Votes
If you cannot physically get to a polling station because of a health condition or disability, the IEC can arrange a home visit. A ballot will be delivered to your registered address within your voting district.
Advance‑Station Votes
If you can reach a polling station but will be unavailable on November 4, you may cast your ballot at your regular voting station on either November 2 or November 3.
Make sure you choose the correct category when you apply.
Election Overview
The upcoming local government elections will feature 136,790 candidates competing for 10,526 council seats across eight metropolitan municipalities, 44 district municipalities, and 205 local municipalities. That’s more than 40,000 extra candidates compared with the 2021 elections.
ID Document Reminder
The Department of Home Affairs urges anyone who needs a replacement ID to do so before election day. You can apply at Home Affairs offices or at more than 450 participating bank branches. A valid ID is essential for casting your vote.
Conclusion
Special votes give South Africans who face scheduling or mobility challenges a real chance to participate in the democratic process. By applying before the October 12 deadline and selecting the appropriate category, you can ensure your voice is heard in the November 4 local government elections. Keep your ID up to date, follow the simple application steps, and mark your calendar for the advance voting days if needed. Your vote matters—make sure it counts.
