Ntshavheni urges privacy as Zuma receives specialist care in KZN

Minister Urges Public to Respect Zuma’s Privacy

Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni asked South Africans to give former president Jacob Zuma space while he receives medical care. Speaking during a briefing by the inter‑ministerial committee on migration, she stressed that only Zuma’s doctors—under the surgeon‑general of the SANDF—can share details about his condition, and only with his consent.

“A person’s status in society does not give anyone the right to invade their privacy,” Ntshavheni said. She added that President Cyril Ramaphosa has placed the surgeon‑general in charge of Zuma’s treatment and urged everyone to let the medical team and the family handle any updates.

Where Zuma Is Being Treated

The 84‑year‑old former leader was admitted to Netcare St Anne’s Hospital in Pietermaritzburg on 7 October. He remains under the care of the SANDF surgeon‑general and his team. His family chose to keep him in KwaZulu‑Natal rather than move him to 1 Military Hospital in Pretoria, citing concerns about the risks of transfer and a strained relationship with the current president.

Because former presidents and their immediate families are entitled to military health services, the government sent a group of specialist doctors—including a resuscitation expert—to KZN on 9 October to support his care.

Early reports described Zuma as critically ill, but later updates said his condition had stabilised. Neither the Presidency nor the family has released a detailed public statement.

MK Party Challenges Speculation

Rumours linking Zuma’s health to possible military unrest have sparked debate. The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party in KZN condemned the speculation, questioning the sources and motives behind the stories.

Mkhuseli Mlengane, the party’s provincial elections spokesperson, warned that unverified claims could cause unnecessary anxiety and fuel political tension in a province with a history of violence. He said the party’s national office has indicated that Zuma is in good spirits and that his campaign activities will continue as planned.

Mlengane urged journalists to verify information before publishing and reminded the public to avoid sharing unverified rumors, especially on social media.

Party’s Next Steps

The MK Party is considering approaching media regulators to examine whether any reporting breached journalistic standards. Party members are encouraged to stay calm and rely on official updates from Zuma’s medical team and family.

Ramaphosa Sends Well‑Wishes

President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation on Friday, confirming that Zuma is unwell and receiving treatment. He said the surgeon‑general has been fully briefed on the case.

“We wish President Zuma a swift recovery and hope he returns to good health soon,” Ramaphosa stated, adding that the former leader continues to serve South Africa in whatever way he can.

Conclusion

The situation surrounding former president Jacob Zuma’s hospitalisation highlights the balance between public interest and personal privacy. Government officials, the MK Party, and President Ramaphosa all agree that only Zuma’s medical team and family should share health details, and that spreading unverified rumors can cause harm. For now, the focus remains on his recovery, and the public is encouraged to respect his privacy while waiting for official updates.
