The real cost of South Africa’s fuel surge is just beginning

Date:

Fuel Prices Skyrocket: How It Hits Your Wallet

The Big News

South Africans are feeling the pinch as fuel prices jumped dramatically starting April 1. Petrol is up by as much as R5 per litre, and diesel has surged over R10 per litre, even with a short-term tax break.

What You’re Paying Now

  • 95 Unleaded Petrol: Now costs between R22.53 and R23.36 per litre.
  • 50 ppm Diesel: Now costs between R25.35 and R26.11 per litre.
    (Prices vary by region.)

Why Are Prices So High?

Two major things are driving this:

  1. War in the Middle East: Conflict has disrupted oil supplies, pushing global Brent crude prices up by about 38% last month.
  2. Weak Rand: Our currency’s strength against the dollar makes imported oil more expensive.
These are added to existing fuel taxes and levies.

How This Affects Your Daily Life

Taxi Fares Are Going Up

The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) says operators must raise fares to cover higher diesel costs.

  • Spokesperson Rebecca Phala confirmed many taxi associations are already increasing prices or finalizing their decisions.
  • The National Taxi Alliance (NTA) suggested specific hikes: R3-R6 more for local trips and R10-R30 more for long-distance trips.

"Fare increases have become necessary to enable associations to sustain their operations," explained Phala, noting costs include maintenance, admin, and vehicle instalments—not just fuel.

Ride-Hailing Apps Are Following Suit

Bolt has officially announced temporary fare increases to help drivers cope.

  • The company says prices will be regularly reviewed based on fuel costs.
  • They will also offer some discounts and subsidies to keep rides affordable for passengers.
  • It’s currently unknown if Uber will make similar changes.

Even Flights Are More Expensive

Airlines like FlySafair, Airlink, and SAA have added fuel surcharges to ticket prices.
This is because jet fuel (A1) costs more due to the same Middle East conflict and shipping route disruptions.

What This Means For You

  • Getting around costs more: Your daily taxi or Bolt ride to school, work, or meet friends will likely be pricier.
  • Weekend trips cost extra: Visiting family in another province or taking a holiday flight now has a hidden fuel cost added.
  • Everything is connected: The war overseas is making your local transport more expensive through higher oil prices.

The Bottom Line

The fuel price hike isn’t just about filling up your parents’ car. It sends shockwaves through all transport—from minibus taxis and app-based rides to airplanes. While companies and associations are adjusting prices to survive, the ultimate burden falls on commuters and travelers. For now, budget for higher travel costs and watch for updates from your usual taxi association or ride-hailing app.
