My Vermont Adventure Inspired by a TV Show

The Scene That Sparked the Trip

I still remember the line from Scandal where Olivia Pope whispers, “We can move to Vermont. I can be mayor and you… I can make jam.” That quiet dream of trading power‑plays for simple pleasures stuck with me. When I finally had the chance, I booked a train to Burlington, Vermont, to see if the real place matched the fantasy.

Heading North on the Train

The Amtrak ride from New York City took about seven hours. As we crept farther north, the temperature dropped and the scenery turned into a winter wonderland. Snow‑capped trees and frosty fields rolled by, making it feel like I was stepping into a live‑action Polar Express. My weather app warned of a high of –6 °F the next day—cold, but I was bundled up and excited.

First Impressions of Burlington

Stepping off the train, Burlington greeted me with crisp air and bright blue skies. The town felt both lively and peaceful, a perfect blend for a short winter getaway. I had three days to soak it all in, and I made sure to hit the highlights.

Exploring Church Street Marketplace

Church Street Marketplace is a car‑free pedestrian strip packed with art galleries, boutique shops, and cafés. Strolling down the street, I admired the historic church at the far end, which looked striking from every angle. To warm up, I ducked into Burlington Bagel Bakery for a cappuccino and their famous “Triple B” bagel—egg, bacon, cheddar, hash browns, and a kick of chipotle mayo. It was comfort food at its finest.

After breakfast, I walked a few blocks to City Hall. The building’s classic architecture contrasted beautifully with the fresh snow, making it a great spot for photos.

Discovering the ECHO Leahy Center

The next day I visited the ECHO Leahy Center for Lake Champlain. This interactive science museum focuses on the lake’s ecosystem and regional wildlife. Even though it’s geared toward families, I found the exhibits fascinating—especially the touch tanks and the displays about local fish species. Watching kids light up as they explored reminded me how curiosity transcends age.

Lake Champlain in Winter

Later I headed to the lake’s shore. The wind was biting, but the view was worth every shiver. Lake Champlain stretched out, a vast sheet of ice and water under a pale winter sky. Standing there, I finally understood why Olivia’s Vermont fantasy involved something as simple as making jam. In a place where nature slows the pace, everyday joys feel amplified.

I spent the rest of the afternoon playing in the snow, chatting with friendly locals, and wandering the town at my own rhythm. The quiet rhythm of Burlington let me breathe, reflect, and just be.

Why Making Jam Feels Right Here

Back in the hustle of daily life, we often chase big achievements. Burlington reminded me that happiness can be found in small, deliberate actions—like stirring a pot of berries on a stove, watching the steam rise, and sharing the sweet result with friends. The town’s calm atmosphere makes those simple rituals feel meaningful.

Conclusion

My trip to Burlington proved that a scene from a TV show can become a real‑life adventure. From the scenic train ride to the charming streets, tasty bites, and serene lake views, Vermont offered the perfect blend of excitement and tranquility. If you ever see a place on screen and wonder what it’s like, take the leap—you might just discover your own version of “mayor and jam” waiting for you.
