Bulls coach warns against underestimating the Dragons in a must-win clash

Bulls Coach Johan Ackermann Warns Against Underestimating Dragons in Crucial URC Clash

The Bulls enter a pivotal phase of the United Rugby Championship (URC) season, knowing that every remaining match could determine whether they reach the playoffs. Head coach Johan Ackermann stressed that the upcoming fixture against the Dragons in Newport is not a game to be taken lightly, despite the Bulls’ current position in the table.

The Stakes for the Bulls

After a disappointing loss to the Stormers on home soil, Ackermann noted that the defeat removed a potential buffer that could have eased the path to a top‑four finish. “The reality is that the results can go one way or the other. If you don’t get the results you risk missing the playoffs, which would be disastrous for us,” he said.

To keep their playoff hopes alive, the Bulls must secure maximum points from their four remaining games. Ackermann emphasized that the first step is a win against the Dragons, followed by disciplined, accurate rugby rather than chasing risky bonus‑point attempts.

“When our discipline is better, we are much more in the game. So it’s a big deal that we need to fix,” Ackermann added, highlighting that reducing penalties and turnovers will be essential against a side that can capitalize on mistakes.

Dragons’ Recent Form

The Dragons have shown they are capable of troubling top‑tier opposition. Earlier in the season they pushed the Stormers and Lions to close contests before securing a Challenge Cup victory over Stade Français, which earned them a quarter‑final spot.

Ackermann pointed out several strengths that the Bulls must respect:

  • A solid breakdown game that slows opposition ball.
  • Effective tackling that limits gain‑line metres.
  • A reliable kicking game that can flip field position.

“They do a lot of good things, so we have to do our best. We can’t underestimate them, depending on where they are in the table,” Ackermann warned.

Key Areas of Focus for the Bulls

In preparation for the Dragons clash, the Bulls’ training sessions have concentrated on:

  • Improving discipline at the tackle and ruck to avoid giving away penalties.
  • Executing structured attacking phases that create scoring opportunities without relying on low‑percentage offloads.
  • Sharpening the kicking game to contest possession and relieve pressure when under siege.

Ackermann also referenced the Bulls’ recent Champions Cup campaign, noting that missed opportunities in Glasgow’s 22‑meter zone and lapses in discipline allowed opponents to gain territory and possession. Addressing those issues, he believes, will give the Bulls a better chance to control the tempo against the Dragons.

URC Schedule for South African Teams

The upcoming URC round features several South African sides, with the Bulls’ match kicking off the weekend:

  • Friday: Dragons vs Bulls – 8:45 p.m. (SA time)
  • Saturday: Stormers vs Connacht – 1:45 p.m.
  • Saturday: Lions vs Glasgow Warriors – 4:00 p.m.
  • Saturday: Ospreys vs Sharks – 8:45 p.m.

Looking ahead, the Bulls will face the Scarlets away, followed by home fixtures against Italian sides Zebre and Benetton at Loftus Versfeld. Ackermann stressed that taking care of business against the Dragons is the first step toward navigating those later challenges successfully.

By maintaining focus, improving discipline, and respecting the Dragons’ capabilities, the Bulls aim to keep their playoff aspirations alive and demonstrate the experience and expertise that have defined their recent URC campaigns.
