Nkhwashu admits visiting KT Molefe in prison

Date:

Brig. Mbangwa Nkhwashu Testifies at the Madlanga Commission

The Visit to Groenpunt Correctional Services

Suspended Brigadier Mbangwa Nkhwashu told the commission that he went to Groenpunt Correctional Services to drop off clothes and food for Katiso “KT” Molefe, who is awaiting trial for murder. He said the trip was made at the request of Fundiswa Nyangule, whom he describes as his “baby sister” and Molefe’s wife.

Denial of a Questionable Relationship

When asked whether he had a suspicious or improper connection with Molefe, Nkhwashu firmly denied it. He stressed that he would never jeopardize his 39‑year police career for someone he had only just met. “I would never put my 39‑year career at risk for a man I had just met,” he said.

Procedure Followed at the Prison

Nkhwashu explained that he followed the normal steps when he arrived at the facility:

  • He identified himself to the officers on duty.
  • He told them he was there to deliver clothing.
  • Officials informed him that visiting hours had ended.
  • They allowed him to hand over the clothes but refused to accept any food, in line with prison rules.
  • He complied, gave the clothing, and left the premises.

Officials Flag the Visit

Correctional staff later reported the visit to investigators. This report raised fresh questions about Nkhwashu’s conduct and added to the scrutiny surrounding his relationship with Molefe.

Molefe’s Response and Family Claims

Katiso Molefe has denied any family link to Nkhwashu. The brigadier rejected that denial, saying such a connection is impossible. The disagreement has intensified public interest in the case.

Background of the Armand Swart Killing

The case centers on the murder of Armand Swart, a 30‑year‑old engineer. On April 17, 2024, Swart was shot 23 times while sitting in his car outside his workplace in Vereeniging. Investigators believe he was a victim of mistaken identity; the intended target was a colleague who had exposed a major corruption scheme involving inflated Transnet contracts.

  • Accused: Katiso “KT” Molefe is alleged to have ordered the hit.
  • Alleged Coordinator: SAPS detective Michael Pule Tau is said to have organized the killing.
  • Suspected Informant: Lucky Molefe, Katiso’s nephew, is believed to have supplied key information about the plot.
  • Current Status: Lucky Molefe is on the run, and a warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Ongoing Investigation and Warrants

The Madlanga Commission continues to hear testimony. Police are still pursuing Lucky Molefe, and the case remains under active investigation as authorities work to uncover the full network behind Swart’s killing.

Conclusion

Brigadier Nkhwashu’s admission that he visited the prison to deliver clothes—while refusing to bring food—has clarified one part of the story. However, his denial of any improper relationship with Molefe, combined with Molefe’s rejection of a family tie, leaves many questions unanswered. As the commission proceeds, the focus will remain on determining whether any lines were crossed in the investigation of Armand Swart’s murder and what role, if any, the accused and their associates played in the crime.
