Chiefs have fewer injuries and are ready to compete with Pirates, coach says

Kaizer Chiefs Overcome Injury Crisis Ahead of Crucial Soweto Derby

After a difficult February marked by multiple serious injuries, Kaizer Chiefs have returned to winning form and are preparing for the upcoming Soweto derby against Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium. Assistant coach Khalil Ben Youssef, who works alongside head coach Cedric Kaze, credited the team’s recent resurgence to the return of key players and a renewed focus on squad cohesion.

How Injuries Shaped the Early‑Season Slump

In February the Amakhosi suffered a four‑game losing streak across all competitions. According to Ben Youssef, the setbacks were primarily caused by contact‑related fractures and ligament injuries rather than training mishaps.

  • Rushwin Dortley – centre‑back undergoing knee surgery (out long‑term)
  • Brandon Petersen – goalkeeper with a finger injury (returned in March)
  • Mfundo Vilakazi – attacker sidelined with a muscular strain
  • Other squad members – various minor knocks that forced frequent rotations

The constant need for substitutions disrupted the team’s rhythm, making it difficult to sustain performance levels, Ben Youssef explained during a pre‑derby press conference in Houghton on Thursday.

Turning Point: March and April Revival

Since the injury list began to shrink, Chiefs have recorded five consecutive wins, followed by a goalless draw against Polokwane City at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium. The run lifted the club to third place in the Premiership with 46 points from 24 matches.

Ben Youssef highlighted the contributions of the returning players:

  • Brandon Petersen’s goalkeeping stability restored confidence at the back.
  • Shabalala’s midfield presence added creativity and defensive cover.
  • The collective effort in training has fostered competition for places, raising overall intensity.

“When the whole team is ready and everyone is with us, you can see the performance has been there and people have enjoyed the football we have played,” Ben Youssef said. He added that maintaining a positive mindset and continuing to win are now the primary objectives.

Title Race Context

As Chiefs aim for their best league finish since the 2018‑19 season under Ernst Middendorp, the Premiership leaders are locked in a tight battle:

  • Orlando Pirates – 58 points from 25 games
  • Mamelodi Sundowns – 57 points from 24 games
  • Kaizer Chiefs – 46 points from 24 games

The upcoming Soweto derby therefore carries added significance, not only for bragging rights but also for the broader title contest.

Looking Forward

Ben Youssef expressed confidence that the squad will be in optimal condition for the Sunday clash, invoking the phrase “Inshallah” (God‑willing) as he hopes to secure three points. While Dortley remains a long‑term concern, the return of Petersen and Shabalala has been pivotal to the recent revival.

The club’s trajectory illustrates how managing player health, fostering squad depth, and maintaining a positive training environment can turn a difficult spell into a competitive challenge.
