Newark family massacre suspect arrested, expected to appear in court next week

Date:

Overview of the Newark Family Tragedy

Seven members of a family were taken from their home in Newark, KwaZulu‑Natal, on a Tuesday evening. They were later found dead in Melmoth, about 200 km away. The case has shocked the community and prompted a swift police response.

Court Appearance Details

The three suspects accused of the killings are set to appear in court for the first time on Tuesday next week. Provincial police spokesman Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the court and investigators agreed on this date.

Prime Minister’s Planned Visit

Prime Minister Thami Ntuli is expected to visit the family’s home on Friday. He will meet with relatives, talk to community leaders, and receive updates from law‑enforcement officials on the investigation’s progress.

What Happened: The Murders

Victims Identified

The victims were:

  • Allen Monswamy, 52
  • His wife Sandy, 57
  • Their son Kraidon, 26
  • Their daughter Shamaria, 20
  • Relative Gonosagren Padayachee, 51
  • Relative Mooniamma Padayachee, 78
  • Relative Mariama Happanah, 83

How the Crime Unfolded

When the domestic helper arrived for work on Wednesday morning, she noticed the family’s vehicles were gone and the house was empty. She called the Newark police, who launched a search.

Officers traced the suspects to the Hlomendlini area, where two men were arrested on Wednesday afternoon. One of them had a cell phone that belonged to Shamaria, the 20‑year‑old victim.

A third suspect was later found in Sundumbili in possession of a firearm.

Details on the Rape Allegations

According to police, the suspects entered the home, tied the family members with rope, and then raped Shamaria before forcing her into a vehicle owned by one of the victims. After collecting the victims’ bank details, they shot three people and stabbed the other four.

Investigators also discovered that money was transferred from the victims’ accounts on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

Investigation Progress

Arrests and Evidence

The suspects are aged 21, 26, and 28. They face charges of murder, kidnapping, robbery, and rape. Police say the quick arrests were possible because of tips from the community and forensic evidence, such as the stolen phone and the firearm.

Financial Moves by Suspects

Bank records show several unauthorized transfers made shortly after the abduction. This information is helping investigators trace the suspects’ movements and build a stronger case for court.

Police Response and Praise

KwaZulu‑Natal provincial commissioner Lieutenant‑General Mkhwanazi praised the officers for their rapid work. He promised that the police will keep investigating until every detail is uncovered and that the suspects will face the full weight of the law.

Conclusion

The Newark family tragedy has left a deep scar on the community. With the suspects due in court soon, the Prime Minister’s visit, and ongoing police efforts, many hope that justice will be served and that the family’s memory will be honored.
