After Brentford’s win, United are close to returning to the Champions League

Manchester United edge closer to Champions League spot after Brentford win

Manchester United’s 2‑1 victory over Brentford on Monday night lifted the club into third place in the Premier League with 61 points, putting them just two points shy of mathematically securing a Champions League berth for the 2025‑26 season.

The win extended United’s unbeaten run under interim head coach Michael Carrick to nine victories in 13 matches, a turnaround that has seen the Red Devils climb from sixth to third since Carrick took charge in January following the departure of Ruben Amorim.

What the win means for United’s European ambitions

With the top five positions in the Premier League granting automatic qualification for next season’s Champions League, United currently sit 11 points clear of sixth‑placed Brighton & Hove Albion, who have four games left to play. Carrick emphasised that while reaching Europe’s elite competition is a priority, the squad must keep pushing for a higher league finish.

“The Champions League is one thing, but we shouldn’t celebrate it too much either,” Carrick told reporters after the match. “We really want to finish at the top of the league and we want to challenge further up the league and try to get more points so our season doesn’t come to an end if that happens.”

Player contributions and squad morale

Midfielder Casemiro opened the scoring for United, a goal that highlighted his continued importance to the side despite ongoing discussions about his future contract. Carrick noted that the Brazilian’s situation is now clear from both the club’s and the player’s perspective.

“It’s pretty clear from both sides. Probably the situation and the clarity helped everything,” Carrick said. “It means a lot to him and it’s an honor for him because of the situation it’s in; he’s also given absolutely everything and had some big moments for us.”

Defender Harry Maguire praised the collective shift in mentality since Carrick’s arrival, pointing to back‑to‑back wins against Arsenal and Manchester City as turning points.

“We had two difficult games when Michael first came in and I think everyone looked at them and thought, ‘Oh no’, with Arsenal and Man City and we managed to get the six points,” Maguire told Sky Sports. “Everyone believed in it and we came together. We have the confidence. We know we can score goals from anywhere.”

Statistical snapshot under Carrick

  • Games managed: 13
  • Wins: 9 (69 %)
  • Draws: 2
  • Losses: 2
  • Points gained: 29 (out of a possible 39)
  • Goal difference: +12

These figures contrast sharply with the first half of the season under Amorim, where United averaged just 1.2 points per game and struggled to keep clean sheets.

Looking ahead: the Liverpool test

United’s next challenge is a Sunday clash against fourth‑placed Liverpool at Old Trafford. A win would not only widen the gap to the teams chasing the top five but also provide a significant psychological boost heading into the final stretch of the campaign.

As the Premier League enters its decisive phase, the combination of Carrick’s tactical adjustments, renewed defensive organisation, and the attacking contributions from players like Casemiro and Maguire will be crucial in determining whether United can convert their current advantage into a guaranteed Champions League place.
