The fall of corrupt ex-police officers

Date:

The Murder of Thulani Nxumalo

What happened?

Between August and October 2019, Thulani Nxumalo, a local ANC branch leader, was shot and killed in KwaNdengezi. His death shocked the community because he had been speaking out against illegal land deals.

The bribe plot

Police officials were paid to tamper with the investigation. Their goal was to make sure the person who ordered the killing and the actual shooter would walk free.

  • Detective Dlamini led the team that first arrested the suspects.
  • Lieutenant Colonel Ndlovu, a police spokesperson, acted as the operation’s coordinator.
  • A bribe of R120,000 was withdrawn by Sibongile Ndlovu (the lieutenant colonel’s wife) to protect her husband, Felokwakhe Ndlovu, who was suspected of being the mastermind.

The money was handed over at Durban Central police station.

Who was involved?

When the Political Killings Task Team stepped in, they arrested several people:

  • Detective Dlamini
  • Sibongile Ndlovu
  • Felokwakhe Ndlovu (her husband)
  • Lieutenant Colonel Ndlovu
  • Felokwakhe’s brother
  • Lindokuhle Mbonambi, the couple’s son, who hid the murder weapon

How the plot was uncovered

The task team’s investigation revealed the bribe payments and the pressure placed on witnesses. Dlamini had even convinced a key state witness to change his statement and refuse to testify against Felokwakhe.

Court verdict

In May 2023, the Durban High Court handed down sentences:

  • One man from KwaNdengezi received life imprisonment for the murder, along with two accomplices.
  • The five police officials involved in the bribery scheme were each sentenced to 17 years in prison and declared unfit to own firearms.

What the judge said

Judge Muntukayise Khumalo criticized the officers sharply:

  • He noted that Dlamini had been a promising young officer who let his ambition lead him astray.
  • He reminded Lieutenant Colonel Ndlovu that, as a senior officer, his duty was to protect victims, not to help criminals escape justice.
  • The judge warned that corruption is growing bolder and that courts must stand firm against it.

Conclusion

The Thulani Nxumalo case shows how corruption can derail a murder investigation and why it’s essential for law‑enforcement to stay honest. The sentences send a clear message: abusing power for personal gain will not be tolerated, and justice will eventually catch up with those who try to hide the truth.
