The Oscars draw a new line in artificial intelligence

Academy Updates Oscars Eligibility Rules for 2027 Awards

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced a series of revisions to its Oscar eligibility guidelines on Friday, marking the first time the organization has formally addressed the role of artificial intelligence in the awards process. The updates, which will apply to the 99th Academy Awards scheduled for 2027, aim to balance technological innovation with the longstanding emphasis on human creative authorship.

AI and Human Authorship

In response to growing concerns about generative AI’s impact on filmmaking, the Academy clarified that AI tools “will neither improve nor harm the chances of receiving a nomination.” Each branch will evaluate submissions by considering the extent to which an individual was at the center of the creative authorship when selecting a film for honor.

The rules also state that the Academy may request additional information from filmmakers about how AI was used and the degree of human involvement. For performances, only portrayals that can be verified as being performed by a consenting human are eligible. This provision leaves open questions about future uses of AI‑generated likenesses, such as a potential AI‑rendered Val Kilmer appearance, which the Academy said it will assess on a case‑by‑case basis.

Screenplay categories receive a more definitive stance: “Screenplays must be written by humans to be considered.” The Academy noted that its eligibility standards have historically evolved alongside technological shifts—from the introduction of sound and color to the adoption of computer‑generated imagery.

International Film Category Reforms

Recognizing criticism that the international film award had become outdated and susceptible to political influence, the Academy expanded the qualifying criteria for entries. Beginning with the 2027 cycle, a film will be eligible if it has won a top award at any of the following festivals:

  • Cannes Film Festival – Palme d’Or
  • Venice Film Festival – Golden Lion
  • Toronto International Film Festival – Platform Award
  • Berlin International Film Festival – Golden Bear
  • Busan International Film Festival – Best Film Award
  • Sundance Film Festival – World Cinema Grand Jury Prize

Under the revised rule, the submitting country is no longer the sole gatekeeper; a film that earns a qualifying festival prize can be considered regardless of its national submission status. The Academy cited the example of Jafar Panahi’s “It Was Just an Accident,” which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 2023 but was entered as France’s official entry rather than Iran’s. Under the new guidelines, the film could be nominated based on its festival accolade alone.

Additionally, the award will now be presented directly to the filmmakers. Oscar plaques will list the film title, followed by the director’s name and, where appropriate, the country of production.

Acting Nominations and Multiple Performances

The Academy also adjusted its acting rules to align with practices in other categories. Performers may now receive more than one nomination in the same acting category if they deliver distinct, award‑worthy performances in separate films during the eligibility window. This mirrors past instances such as Steven Soderbergh’s dual Best Director nominations for “Traffic” and “Erin Brockovich” at the 73rd Academy Awards.

Original Song Eligibility Clarified

For music categories, the Academy specified that a song must overlap at least the final 15 seconds of a film before the end credits begin to be considered eligible if its first musical note appears over the credits. The clarification aims to prevent songs that merely play during the credits from qualifying without substantive integration into the picture.

The organization emphasized that these updates reflect its ongoing commitment to evolve with industry developments while preserving the core values that have defined the Oscars for nearly a century.
