What impact will the Iran War have on the wedding industry?

How a Literary Romance Is Shaping Modern Bridal Trends

The latest film adaptation of Wuthering Heights by director Emerald Fennell has sparked a noticeable shift in wedding fashion, according to reports from the National Wedding Show held at London’s ExCel centre on 11‑12 April 2025. Designers attending the event noted that the film’s moody, pastoral aesthetic is translating into softer silhouettes, luxurious draping, and intricate detailing on the bridal catwalk.

Key Design Elements Inspired by the Film

Josephine Scott, a London‑based bridal designer, highlighted two recurring features that brides are requesting:

  • Lush fabric draping that creates an effortless, sculpted look without forcing the figure into a rigid shape.
  • Strategic pick‑ups that add volume and texture, offering a fresh alternative to the classic A‑line silhouette.

Scott explained that the goal is to achieve a “naturally beautiful” silhouette that feels both romantic and contemporary—a direct nod to the windswept moors depicted in the adaptation.

Hand‑Painted Gowns: A Bespoke Alternative

Another standout trend showcased at the show was Alan Hannah’s hand‑painted wedding dresses. Each gown is created in Hannah’s London studio, allowing brides to select the base fabric colour or even contribute to the artwork.

According to Hannah, the price point for a fully hand‑painted dress sits around £5,000. While this represents a significant investment for a garment typically worn once, Hannah notes that the personalised nature of the piece justifies the cost for many clients seeking a truly unique wedding ensemble.

Economic Pressures on the Bridal Industry

Rising global costs are influencing every facet of wedding planning, from fabric selection to travel logistics. Both Scott and Hannah pointed to several interconnected factors driving price increases:

  • Higher oil prices, stemming from recent geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, have raised the cost of shipping fabrics and finished garments.
  • Increased fuel expenses affect transportation for wedding venues, limousine hire, and even the delivery of flowers that are often sourced overseas.
  • General inflation has pushed up the price of raw materials, including silk, lace, and tulle.

Scott remarked, “We always try to keep prices as low as possible, but that’s just part of the world today. Everything is going up.” Hannah added that his three‑decade experience has taught him to adapt, noting that he mitigates some cost pressures by incorporating recycled fabrics where feasible.

Impact on Destination Weddings

For couples planning ceremonies abroad, the financial picture becomes more complex. Sharron Masoura, who has hosted weddings in Cyprus for three decades, explained that while regional conflicts have not deterred couples from choosing the island, fuel costs for her yacht‑based venues have risen sharply.

“Our main cost is fuel for the yachts, and that is very expensive. We also need bands, transportation, trucks—everything adds up,” Masoura said. She emphasized that her business absorbs these increases rather than passing them directly onto clients.

Travel consultant Ligia Schuurman of Not Just Travel observed a growing appetite for unconventional wedding locations, citing Antarctica as an emerging favourite. However, she cautioned that no destination is immune to fluctuating fuel prices.

Schuurman advised couples to book through travel agents, which provides greater flexibility to adjust plans should costs shift before the wedding date.

Looking Ahead: Balancing Romance with Practicality

The intersection of literary inspiration, designer ingenuity, and economic reality is shaping a new era of bridal fashion. While the ethereal draping and artistic detailing inspired by Wuthering Heights continue to captivate brides, designers and planners alike are navigating a landscape marked by rising material and logistical costs.

By embracing sustainable practices—such as using recycled fabrics—and offering bespoke options like hand‑painted gowns, the industry aims to preserve the romance of the wedding day while remaining responsive to the broader economic climate.
