DA elects George Michalakis as new parliamentary leader

Date:

Democratic Alliance Chooses New Parliamentary Leader

Who Is George Michalakis?

George Michalakis is a member of the Democratic Alliance (DA) who has been serving as the party’s chief whip in the National Assembly since June 2024. In that role he helped coordinate DA members’ votes and kept the caucus organized during parliamentary sessions.

His Role Before the Election

Before becoming chief whip, Michalakis worked behind the scenes on policy research and constituency outreach. His experience gave him a solid understanding of how Parliament works and what issues matter most to everyday South Africans.

Why the DA Needed a New Leader

After the May 2024 general elections, Geordin Hill‑Lewis was elected as the DA’s federal leader. Hill‑Lewis decided to stay on as mayor of Cape Town instead of moving to national politics, which left a vacancy for the DA’s parliamentary leader. The caucus needed someone to step up and guide the party’s work in the National Assembly.

What Michalakis Plans to Do

As the new parliamentary leader, Michalakis said he will:

  • Lead the DA’s legislative agenda, including pushing a bill to replace Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) rules and to stop impeached officials from holding parliamentary seats.
  • Ensure rigorous oversight of the government, holding ministers and departments accountable for their actions.
  • Use Parliament as a platform to advocate for policies that benefit all South Africans, especially young people and marginalized communities.

Voices from the Party

Desiree van der Walt, the DA caucus chairperson, announced the appointment and expressed confidence in Michalakis:

“He will spearhead the DA’s efforts to rescue South Africa in line with our commitments to the electorate in the last election.”

She added that the party believes Michalakis will vigorously defend DA values and fight for what is best for all South Africans in Parliament.

Looking Ahead

With Michalakis at the helm, the DA aims to be a strong, active opposition that challenges the government while offering constructive alternatives. His focus on transparency, accountability, and youth‑friendly policies could shape the party’s approach in the coming parliamentary term.

Conclusion

The election of George Michalakis as the DA’s new parliamentary leader marks a fresh chapter for the party in South Africa’s National Assembly. His experience as chief whip, combined with a clear vision for legislative action and government oversight, positions him to lead the DA’s efforts to represent and serve the public—especially the younger generation that will inherit the country’s future.
