African Banker Magazine Reveals 2026 Awards Shortlist of 55 Nominees
The African Banker magazine has published the shortlist for its 2026 African Banker Awards, naming 55 contenders selected from more than 250 submissions across nine award categories. The announcement highlights the continued growth and innovation within Africa’s financial services sector as the awards mark their 20th edition.
Key Details of the 2026 Edition
The winners will be unveiled at a gala ceremony on 27 May 2026 in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo, coinciding with the annual meeting of the African Development Bank (AfDB). Organised by African Banker magazine and IC Events, the awards operate under the auspices of the AfDB, underscoring the event’s stature within continental banking circles.
According to Omar Ben Yedder, Chair of the Awards Committee, the past two decades have witnessed a transformation in how African banks structure finance:
“Over the last twenty years, we have seen a significant evolution in the work of banks. They are now structuring ground‑breaking transactions, leveraging domestic capital and their own balance sheets to finance transformative projects. The deal categories continue to demonstrate innovation to deliver much‑needed home‑grown solutions.”
Spotlight on Female Leadership
This year’s shortlist includes three female bank chief executives nominated for the prestigious Banker of the Year award, an increase from two female contenders in 2025. Their presence reflects a broader trend of rising gender diversity at the helm of African financial institutions.
Award Categories and Sponsorship
The 55 nominees span nine categories, ranging from retail banking excellence to innovative digital solutions and sustainable finance initiatives. Supporting the ceremony are:
- Platinum Sponsor: African Guarantee Fund – a risk‑sharing facility designed to encourage commercial bank lending to small and medium‑sized enterprises.
- Exclusive Cocktail Sponsor: African Trade and Investment Development Insurance (ATIDI) – provider of sovereign risk insurance and related coverage.
- Gold Sponsors: Afreximbank and the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID).
These partnerships reinforce the awards’ commitment to highlighting initiatives that drive inclusive growth and resilient economies across the continent.
Looking Ahead
As the African Banker Awards enter their third decade, they continue to serve as a benchmark for excellence, encouraging banks to adopt innovative practices that address Africa’s unique development challenges. The upcoming gala in Brazzaville will not only celebrate individual and organisational achievements but also foster dialogue on the future of banking in Africa.
