South Africa’s Political Agenda This Week: Urban Development, Governance and Election Readiness

South Africa’s national and provincial leaders are set to address a range of pressing issues from urban housing challenges to election security, reflecting a coordinated push toward sustainable development and strengthened public accountability. The week’s schedule highlights the work of ministers, portfolio committees and political parties as they prepare for the 2026 local elections.

Human Settlements Minister Leads SA Delegation to World Urban Forum

On Sunday, Human Settlements Minister Thembi Simelane will head the South African delegation to the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, Azerbaijan. The forum, convened under the theme “Housing the World: Safe and Resilient Cities and Communities,” runs from Sunday to Friday and brings together policymakers, urban planners and civil society to tackle the global housing crisis.

According to UN‑Habitat, an estimated 1.6 billion people lack adequate housing worldwide, a figure that underscores the urgency of discussions on affordable housing, climate‑resilient infrastructure and inclusive urban planning (UN‑Habitat WUF13 page). South Africa’s participation aims to share its experiences with informal settlement upgrading and to attract investment for sustainable urban projects.

Gauteng MEC Outlines Economic Development Priorities

On Monday, Gauteng MEC for Economic Development, Agriculture and Rural Development Vuyiswa Ramokgopa will brief the media on the province’s economic development agenda and the performance of entities under her portfolio. The briefing comes as Gauteng faces pressure to reignite growth, improve governance in state‑owned enterprises and unlock private‑sector investment to combat unemployment, which stood at 34.5 % in the latest Quarterly Labour Force Survey.

Key points expected to be highlighted include:

  • Expansion of the Gauteng Industrial Development Zone (GIDZ) to attract manufacturing and tech firms.
  • Revised incentives for agribusinesses to boost food security in the province’s peri‑urban areas.
  • Strengthening oversight mechanisms for entities such as the Gauteng Growth and Development Agency.

Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Honours Mandela Collection

Also on Monday, Minister for Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie will lead a memorial ceremony at the Bhunga Building in Mthatha to declare the Nelson Mandela Gift of the Nation Collection a Specially Protected National Treasure. The collection — comprising children’s drawings, diplomatic gifts and personal artefacts — was formally recognised as a Specially Protected Heritage Collection by the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) on 30 March 2024 (SAHRA Gazette Notice).

The declaration ensures enhanced legal protection and funding for conservation, reinforcing South Africa’s commitment to preserving its liberation‑heritage assets for future generations.

Higher Education Minister Oversees NSFAS Administration

On Tuesday, Higher Education Minister Buti Manamela will conduct a day‑long oversight meeting at the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) headquarters in Cape Town. The session will examine the decision to place NSFAS into administration amid ongoing operational and governance challenges, including delayed disbursements and allegations of maladministration.

Minister Manamela’s review aligns with the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Higher Education’s call for stricter financial controls and improved service delivery to the estimated 700 000 students relying on NSFAS funding each year.

Parliamentary Committees Tackle Electoral Integrity, Water Reform and Sports Infrastructure

The parliamentary programme for the week also features several committee hearings:

  • Portfolio Committee on Communications and Digital Technologies will meet with Meta Platforms for a night workshop on election security protocols, content moderation and misinformation counter‑measures ahead of the 2026 local elections. Earlier,
