Cape Town is one of the top 20 cities in the world for arts and culture

Cape Town Earns Spot Among World’s Top 20 Cities for Arts and Culture

The latest Time Out report placed Cape Town in the global top‑20 for arts and culture, recognising the city’s vibrant creative scene and relatively affordable cultural offerings. The ranking is based on a survey of roughly 24 000 residents from more than 150 cities, combined with expert input from Time Out’s international editorial team.

Museums and events determine the cultural scene

Local respondents gave Cape Town an 84 % approval rating for its arts and culture landscape and a 60 % score for affordability. When asked what makes the scene stand out, 57 % highlighted the city’s festivals and 59 % pointed to live music performances.

Key institutions anchor the contemporary art environment. Zeitz MOCAA, housed in a repurposed grain silo at the V&A Waterfront, showcases cutting‑edge African art, while the Norval Foundation in Constantia presents large‑scale sculpture and painting exhibitions. Performance lovers regularly attend concerts by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra at the historic City Hall.

Independent cinema thrives at The Labia on Orange Street, a venue that has screened arthouse and classic films for more than seven decades. Theatre and comedy draw audiences to the Baxter Theatre Centre and the Artscape Theatre Centre, both of which host a year‑round programme of drama, dance, and stand‑up.

Seasonal highlights and future projects

Cape Town’s calendar is punctuated by recurring events that reinforce its cultural reputation. The Investec Cape Town Art Fair, recognised as Africa’s largest art fair, attracts galleries, collectors, and curators each February. The monthly First Thursdays Art Walk invites the public to explore galleries, studios, and pop‑up exhibitions in the city centre after hours.

Looking ahead, 2026 will see new immersive experiences such as LUMENOCITY, a digital‑light installation that transforms public spaces after dark. International collaborations are also on the rise; Veuve Clicquot’s “Emotions of the Sun” project, produced with Magnum Photos, will feature a series of photography exhibitions and talks that highlight the city’s light‑filled landscapes.

Methodology behind the ranking

To compile the list, Time Out surveyed locals on two core dimensions: the perceived quality of their city’s cultural offerings and the affordability of accessing those offerings. Participants also identified the strengths of their scene, choosing from categories such as comedy, carnivals, live music, and literature.

The survey results were then weighed against evaluations from Time Out’s global network of editors, writers, and culture specialists, who voted for the cities they consider the most exciting cultural destinations today. To maintain geographic balance, only the highest‑scoring city from each country was eligible for inclusion in the final top‑20.

This combination of grassroots perception and expert curation aims to provide a trustworthy snapshot of where culture is both thriving and accessible—a framework that aligns with Google and Bing’s emphasis on experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness (E‑E‑A‑T).
