Morocco experiences a global gaming boom at the Rabat Expo

Date:

Morocco Gaming Expo Highlights Growing African Game Industry

The Morocco Gaming Expo, held in Rabat, brought together developers, investors, and esports enthusiasts from across the globe to showcase the nation’s emerging gaming ecosystem. Organizers reported that the three‑day event attracted over 5,000 visitors, including representatives from more than 30 international studios and a sizable contingent of local talent.

Showcase of Local and International Titles

Attendees had the chance to play a variety of demos, ranging from blockbuster releases to home‑grown projects. Notable highlights included:

  • Garena’s fast‑paced shooter “Choppy Cuts” and the tactical title “Delta Force”.
  • The educational game “1001 Questions about Morocco”, co‑developed with the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication to teach players about the country’s history, geography, and culture.
  • Several indie prototypes from Moroccan studios that incorporated traditional music, folklore, and architectural motifs.

According to the expo’s post‑event press release, the locally inspired titles received particularly strong feedback from visitors who appreciated seeing familiar cultural references in interactive form.

Government Ambitions and Market Potential

Mohamed El Mehdi Bensaid, Morocco’s Minister of Youth, Culture and Communication, outlined the country’s strategic vision for the sector during a keynote address. He stated that Morocco aims to capture one percent of the $300 billion global video‑game market within the next five years, a target that would translate into roughly $3 billion in annual revenue.

The minister emphasized that achieving this goal would create new career pathways for young Moroccans in areas such as software engineering, game design, animation, and esports management. He also noted that the government is working on incentive packages, including tax breaks and grant programs, to attract both domestic and foreign investment.

Insights from International Experts

British game developer Erin Roberts, known for his work on titles like “Star Citizen”, participated in a panel discussion on talent development. Roberts stressed the importance of nurturing local talent through mentorship programs, accessible education, and community‑driven game jams. He added that “when developers see their own stories reflected in games, the resulting products resonate more deeply with players worldwide.”

Kawtar Jalili, founder of the Kiddo Interactive pavilion, highlighted the growing appetite for African‑centric gaming experiences. Jalili pointed to rising mobile penetration across the continent and the success of titles that incorporate indigenous languages and narratives as key drivers of market expansion.

Beyond Traditional Gaming: Cosplay, AI, AR, and Esports

The expo also featured a variety of side‑events that illustrated the broader cultural impact of gaming:

  • A cosplay competition that drew participants dressed as characters from both international franchises and Moroccan mythology.
  • Demonstrations of AI‑powered tools that assist with procedural content generation, character animation, and quality‑assurance testing.
  • Augmented reality installations that allowed visitors to overlay game elements onto historic sites in Rabat’s medina.
  • Fortnite esports tournaments, with prize pools funded by local sponsors, showcasing the competitive scene’s growing popularity among Moroccan youth.

These activities underscored the expo’s commitment to presenting gaming as a multidisciplinary platform that intersects technology, art, education, and sport.

Looking Ahead

Industry analysts who attended the event noted that Morocco’s combination of governmental support, a youthful population, and increasing internet connectivity positions it well to become a regional hub for game development. Continued investment in infrastructure, education, and international collaboration will be essential to turning the expo’s momentum into sustained industry growth.

As the Morocco Gaming Expo concludes, stakeholders express optimism that the showcased projects and partnerships will lay the foundation for a vibrant gaming ecosystem that not only contributes to the national economy but also celebrates Morocco’s rich cultural heritage on the global stage.
