MK Party Chief Whip Faces Salary Fraud Charges
What Happened?
On Thursday, Mmabatho Mokoena-Zondi, the Chief Whip of the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party) in Parliament, appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court. She was arrested by the Hawks and granted bail of R30,000. The case has been postponed to June 18 for further investigation.
Allegations from the Hawks
The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) says that between August and December 2024, Mokoena-Zondi recruited four people to work as researchers for the party. During their employment, she allegedly told them that part of their salary was needed to cover legal costs for the party’s president, Jacob Zuma.
According to the Hawks, the workers were forced to hand over 50 % to 60 % of their pay. In total, the alleged fraud amounts to R233,317.99.
Party’s Response
The MK Party acknowledged the arrest and said Mokoena-Zondi voluntarily presented herself to law enforcement. A spokesperson, Sifiso Mahlangu, stated that the party remains committed to constitutionalism and the rule of law. The party promised to release an official statement after reviewing the situation.
About Mmabatho Mokoena-Zondi
Mokoena-Zondi became a Member of Parliament in the National Assembly in February 2026. Shortly after, she was appointed Chief Whip, taking over from Colleen Makhubele, who left the party to join Power FM as a presenter.
Before her role as Chief Whip, she served as Chief Whip in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) and acted as chief whip to oversee caucus governance and liaise with the Speaker’s Office. She is also one of three MK Party MPs serving on the Impeachment Committee that examines President Cyril Ramaphosa’s conduct in the Phala Phala saga, alongside deputy president and parliamentary leader John Hlophe and Khanyisile Litchfield‑Tshabalala.
