Date:

Nine Suspects Set for Court Appearance in Cape Town Kidnapping Case

What Happened?

On May 25, a 51‑year‑old businessman from Summer Greens was taken from his home. Armed men burst in, stole mobile phones and a large amount of cash, and then kidnapped the victim.

Arrests and Rescue

Police acted quickly. The Anti‑Kidnapping Task Team carried out two waves of arrests:

First wave – Friday, May 29

Detectives, intelligence officers and a special unit raided several properties in Makhaza, Khayelitsha. Five suspects were taken into custody.

Second wave – Monday, June 1

Further clues led the team to Saldanha. They first arrested a suspect on Basil February Street. Then they moved to a house on Noordse Street, where they found the hostage handcuffed and showing signs of possible torture. Three more suspects were arrested there, and the businessman was rescued and taken to a medical facility for treatment.

Charges They Face

The nine suspects—seven men and two women aged between 20 and 50—will appear in the Cape Town Magistrates Court on Wednesday. They are charged with:

  • Kidnapping
  • Robbery
  • Extortion
  • Possession of stolen property
  • Firearms and ammunition offences

Police Reaction

Provincial police spokesman Brigadier Novela Potelwa praised the task team for their diligent work. She said the operation shows how coordinated efforts can lead to a successful rescue and bring criminals to justice.

What’s Next?

The suspects will now go through the court process. If found guilty, they could face significant prison sentences. The case continues to be investigated, and police urge anyone with additional information to come forward.

Conclusion

This incident highlights the seriousness of kidnapping and related crimes in the Western Cape. Thanks to swift police action, the hostage was saved, and nine individuals are now answerable for their alleged actions. The upcoming court hearing will be a key step in delivering justice for the victim and the community.
