Dina Marais, 73, and Ernst Marais, 71, lived in Mossel Bay and were known for their warm personalities and love of the outdoors. May 19 – Reported Missing

On Wednesday morning, park staff and fellow campers noticed the couple was missing. Their green Ford Ranger crew cab was also gone.

May 22 – Bodies Found

Two days later, authorities discovered the bodies of Dina and Ernst floating on the banks of the Levubu River near its junction with the Limpopo River at Cross Corner.

Investigation Details

Cause of Death

Forensic examiners found that Ernst suffered multiple stab wounds to the upper body. Dina also sustained serious injuries consistent with attacks from a sharp object. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police Statement

Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba of the Limpopo police told IOL that the investigation is ongoing and at an advanced stage. Authorities have opened a case for double murder and are treating the missing vehicle as part of the crime scene.
