New York businesses are preparing for the influx of World Cup fans

New York Gears Up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Influx

As the kickoff of the 2026 FIFA World Cup draws nearer, businesses across New York City are tightening their preparations for a surge of fans and tourists. The tournament, which will be hosted jointly by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, marks the first time the competition expands to 48 teams (FIFA, 2023). While the opening match is scheduled for next week, many New York merchants say they are already feeling the impact.

Retailers Stock Up on Jerseys and Memorabilia

Mickey Voll, marketing director at Pelé Soccer—a store located in the heart of Times Square—said the shop has doubled its inventory in anticipation of heightened demand. According to Voll, jerseys bearing the names of global stars such as Lionel Messi (Argentina), Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal), and Kylian Mbappé (France) are selling out rapidly.

He also noted strong interest in specialty items, including a Brazil‑Jordan collaboration jersey and a limited‑edition piece honoring Jamaica’s Bob Marley legacy, even though Jamaica did not qualify for the tournament.

“The typical players like Messi, so Argentina jerseys with Messi on the back or the expression of Messi, Ronaldo jerseys for Portugal, Mbappe for France,” Voll explained. “And then the special pieces like the Brazilian jersey in collaboration with Jordan. Unfortunately Jamaica didn’t qualify, but Jamaica had a specific piece with the Bob Marley family. All of these special jerseys were flying over the counter.”

Restaurants Launch a $26 Meal Initiative

In an effort to make dining accessible during the tournament, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a city‑wide program that encourages participating eateries to offer a complete meal for $26. The initiative, which spans the city’s five boroughs, also provides diners with a reusable plastic World Cup cup branded for each district.

Morgan’s Brooklyn Barbecue, owned by Mathew Glazier, is one of the establishments taking part. Glazier described the deal as a “bargain” in today’s costly food environment.

“I think $26 is a bargain in New York these days for a large meal and a large drink,” Glazier said. “Things have gotten so, so expensive. Food prices, you know, everyone, no matter where you are, knows what’s going on with food costs in this world. And I think it’s an opportunity for us, along with other restaurants, to show what we’re doing. New York, look, there are great restaurants in New York, from barbecue to anything else that anyone could want. This gives people the opportunity when they’re here for a while to try different things and still have some money for other things.”

Potential Scheduling Overlap with the NBA Finals

City officials are also monitoring a possible calendar clash: if the NBA Finals extend to a sixth game on June 16, it would coincide with the France‑Senegal World Cup match. Voll remarked that such an overlap could turn Penn Station into a “crazy, fun day” as fans from both events converge.

Transportation and Safety Preparations

To manage the expected surge in pedestrian and vehicular traffic, the New York Department of Transportation has designated “Gridlock Alert Days” for every World Cup match hosted at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Authorities are urging residents and visitors to consider remote work or public transit options on those dates.

In addition, the New York Police Department announced plans to deploy additional law‑enforcement personnel to major transportation hubs and event venues. The move aims to ensure public safety while accommodating the heightened crowds.

Looking Ahead

With less than a week until the tournament’s official start, New York’s businesses, city agencies, and residents are aligning their efforts to welcome an international audience. By combining targeted inventory boosts, affordable dining options, and proactive traffic management, the city aims to showcase its hospitality while maintaining safety and accessibility for all.
