New details surrounding Nhlamulo Sambo’s murder emerge as police dismiss allegations of xenophobic violence

Western Cape Police Deny Xenophobic Motive in Teen’s Death

The Incident

Nhlamulo Sambo, a 19‑year‑old from Giyani in Limpopo, was found stabbed to death in KwaNonqaba, Mossel Bay on Sunday, May 31. He was staying at a friend’s house when the attack happened.

Family’s Claims

Nhlamulo’s sister, Nonhlanhla Sambo, posted on Facebook that her brother was targeted because he spoke Xitsonga. She wrote that he was “stabbed to death during xenophobic riots” and that his only “mistake” was being a Tsonga in a Xhosa‑speaking community. Their mother, Nkateko Sambo, echoed the same story in a video, saying the attackers called her son a foreigner even though he is a South African citizen.

Police Investigation

Western Cape police commissioner Thembisile Patekile said early evidence points to a different motive. According to a 15‑year‑old who was with Nhlamulo, the two entered a hut intending to take some items. The hut’s owner arrived, confronted them, chased Nhlamulo, and stabbed him. Police say the killing appears to be linked to an alleged theft attempt, not to anti‑immigrant sentiment. Commissioner Patekile added that officers are still searching for the suspect.

Community Reaction

The conflicting accounts have sparked debate online and in local neighborhoods. Some residents support the family’s view that the killing was hate‑driven, while others urge caution until the investigation is complete. Community leaders have called for calm and urged everyone to let the police finish their work.

What’s Next

Police continue to look for the person who stabbed Nhlamulo. The Sambo family awaits further updates and has asked for justice. IOL News has reached out to the family for comment on the police’s latest statement, but no reply was available at the time of publishing.

Conclusion

While Nhlamulo’s family believes he was killed because of his language and background, police say the evidence suggests a robbery gone wrong. As the investigation unfolds, the community waits for clarity and hopes that the truth will bring peace to all involved.
