Inside Mexico’s stunning street art “Woven Sky” honoring the World Cup teams

Woven Sky: Zapopan’s Record‑Breaking Crochet Canopy for the 2026 World Cup

What Is “Cielo Tejido”?

“Cielo Tejido” (Woven Sky) is a massive hand‑crocheted canopy that stretches 220 meters along Andador 20 de Noviembre, a busy pedestrian street in Zapopan’s historic centre. Made by over 200 local artisans, it blends traditional Mexican craft with the excitement of the upcoming World Cup.

The Makers Behind the Masterpiece

Etzatlán Weavers Association

The project was led by the Etzatlán Weavers Association, also known as the Cielo Tejido collective. Founded by mother‑daughter team Lorena Ron and Paloma, the group focuses on keeping Mexican textile traditions alive on a large scale.

A Community Effort

More than 200 weavers from the surrounding area contributed their skills. Together they used an astonishing 1,400 kilometers of yarn and colored raffia cord to build the canopy.

From Record‑Breaker to World‑Cup Tribute

Guinness World Record

Before coming to Zapopan, the same group set a Guinness World Record for the largest crochet canopy ever made in Etzatlán. That earlier work took over eight months to complete.

Design Inspired by Competing Nations

The new canopy honors the teams that will play matches in Guadalajara’s Akron Stadium: Mexico, Colombia, South Korea, Uruguay, Spain, the Czech Republic, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Each nation’s flag colors and motifs are woven into the fabric.

Aztec Symbolism

Running the length of the canopy is an Aztec feathered serpent that appears to “shed its skin” as it passes the totems representing each playing country. This mythical creature adds a deep cultural layer to the design.

More Than Just Art

Tree‑Like Totems and Football Vibes

Along the walkway stand tall, tree‑shaped structures covered in colorful crocheted hexagons. They symbolize the connection between heaven and earth in indigenous folklore while also reminding viewers of a football’s patchwork pattern.

Practical Sun Shade

June in Jalisco can be scorching. The dense crochet roof filters harsh sunlight, casting playful, multicolored shadows on pedestrians, tourists, and fans enjoying cafés below.

Public Reaction

Locals and visitors have been flocking to see the installation. Social media posts highlight the awe it inspires:

  • @louis_vargnelli: “Yesterday I looked at it, it’s an absolute beauty and a work of art 😍😍😍 That’s why we’re going to be the best headquarters in the world.”
  • @maviespiep: “Honestly this is very beautiful, you can see the tremendous work and love they put into it. I’m from Uruguay and I fell in love with their art. Congratulations!!!”
  • @victoriamerceria: “What a beauty 🥰 this is art! 100% handmade by a huge community who loves the art of knitting 🧶🌈.”

Why This Project Matters

“Cielo Tejido” shows how traditional crafts can meet modern celebrations. It brings together heritage, community effort, and the global excitement of football, creating a shared space where culture and sport intersect.

Conclusion

The Woven Sky canopy is more than a eye‑catching decoration; it’s a living tribute to Mexican artistry, international friendship, and the joy of the World Cup. As fans stroll beneath its colorful arches, they experience a blend of history, craftsmanship, and the universal language of sport—all in one unforgettable walk through Zapopan.
