Undocumented foreign nationals arrested for allegedly selling expired medicines in Western Cape

Police Bust Illegal Medicine Sale in Vrygrond

What Happened?

On Thursday evening, officers from Operation Prosper were patrolling the Vrygrond area of Muizenberg when they got a tip about a shop selling medicines illegally. Acting on the information, the police went to a building on Berg Street and entered the store to check what was being sold.

What Was Found?

Inside the shop, officers saw a variety of medications stacked on the shelves. During the inspection they noticed that several of the drugs had passed their expiry dates—some even listed an expiration year of 2025, which means they were already out of date. The police seized these medicines and handed them over as evidence to the Muizenberg SAPS station.

Who Is the Suspect?

While searching the premises, officers discovered that the person running the shop was a 22‑year‑old foreign national who did not have any legal documents allowing him to stay in South Africa. He was therefore living in the country without proper immigration paperwork.

Legal Charges

The suspect has been arrested and is expected to appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court. He faces charges under:

  • The Medicines and Related Substances Act – for selling expired and prescription drugs without authorization.
  • Immigration laws – for being in South Africa illegally.

Why This Matters

Selling outdated medication can be dangerous because the drugs may not work as intended or could cause harmful side effects. When medicines are sold without proper oversight, it puts the health of the community at risk. Additionally, staying in a country without the correct visas or permits breaks the law and can lead to detention or deportation.

Conclusion

This incident shows how police patrols and community tips can help stop illegal activities that threaten public safety. By removing expired drugs from the market and addressing immigration violations, authorities aim to protect both the health and legal order of neighborhoods like Vrygrond. Staying informed and reporting suspicious activity helps keep everyone safer.
