Sun International and Flanagan & Gerard are laying the foundation stone for a major project in Cape Town

Date:

Groundbreaking Starts on GrandWest Mall Expansion

Construction has officially kicked off on the R650 million GrandWest Mall in Cape Town. The ceremony followed the May transfer of the site to the joint venture between Flanagan & Gerard Property Group and GrandWest, a Sun International subsidiary.

What the Mall Will Look Like

The new single‑level centre will cover 22 000 square metres. Its design takes cues from the Western Cape coastline: a flowing, Fibonacci‑inspired curve that echoes shells, waves and sailing ships. Lighting fixtures resemble lobster cages and other seaside elements. Materials such as exposed concrete, natural timber and metal panels give the space a modern winery feel.

Natural Textures and Local Flair

Exposed concrete, wood and metal sheets create a tactile environment that mirrors the region’s contemporary vineyards. The developers emphasise a strong local focus, planning to source most labour, materials and subcontractors from the Western Cape.

Tenants Already on Board

More than 70 % of the leasable space is already secured, with another 20 % under negotiation. Anchor stores include a 3 000 sqm Checkers FreshX, a 2 500 sqm SuperSpar, Dis‑Chem and Clicks. Additional retailers from the Mr Price Group, Truworths Group and Pepkor have also signed up.

More Than Just Shopping

The mall is positioned as an extension of GrandWest’s existing entertainment hub. Besides shops, visitors will find restaurants, a gym, padel courts and a rooftop event venue. The goal is to create a lively district that offers dining, fitness and social spaces alongside retail.

Boosting the Local Economy

James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, highlighted the project as a sign of confidence in Cape Town’s economy. He noted that private‑sector investment like this drives job creation, strengthens retail and supports the city’s growth agenda.

City Initiatives Supporting Growth

The municipality continues to improve the investment climate through programmes such as Ease of Doing Business, expanded international flight connections and targeted destination marketing.

Strategic Location

Situated between the N1 and N2 highways along the M7 route, the mall will serve nearby suburbs including Goodwood, Thornton, Bonteheuwel, Elsies River, Kensington, Parow, Gugulethu and Langa. The absence of a major regional shopping centre in the immediate area, combined with Cape Town’s northward expansion toward the N7 corridor, makes the site commercially attractive.

Looking Ahead

Paul Gerard, Managing Director of Flanagan & Gerard Property Group, said the groundbreaking marks the culmination of years of planning. He praised the collaborative team—joint‑venture partner, contractor, architects and tenants—and expressed excitement about welcoming the community when the mall opens in June 2027.

Conclusion

The GrandWest Mall development blends striking coastal‑inspired architecture with a strong commitment to local employment and suppliers. With most space already leased, a diverse mix of retailers, leisure facilities and easy access from major roads, the project is set to become a vibrant addition to Cape Town’s entertainment landscape, reinforcing confidence in the city’s economic future.
