Muslim coalition rejects June 30 shutdown and calls for arrests over violence

Muslim Coalition Rejects Planned June 30 Shutdown

Statement of Opposition
A coalition of 22 Islamic organisations has come out firmly against the proposed national shutdown set for June 30. The groups say they will not tolerate any violence or vigilante actions aimed at peaceful South Africans or foreign nationals, regardless of their documentation status. Their stance is rooted in respect for human dignity and a growing alarm over anti‑immigrant rallies that have turned increasingly aggressive, sowing fear and instability in several communities.

Who’s Involved
The statement was signed by a broad spectrum of Muslim voices, including:

  • Afro‑Middle East Centre
  • Call of Islam
  • Islamic Medical Association of South Africa
  • Media Review
  • Muslim Youth Movement of South Africa
  • South African National Muslim Women’s Forum
  • plus many other local Islamic groups

Call to Religious Leaders
The coalition urges Muslim scholars and clerics to break their silence. They specifically ask that Friday congregational sermons on June 26, 2026 focus on condemning xenophobia, Afrophobia, Islamophobia, vigilantism, and any unlawful violence. “We dare not stay silent when mob threats and intimidation appear,” the groups warned, noting that today’s target could be tomorrow’s.

Addressing Root Causes
While acknowledging genuine concerns about immigration, the coalition stresses that lasting solutions lie in tackling the social and economic conditions that fuel resentment. They call on the government and private sector to confront poverty, unemployment, and inequality—factors that often drive anti‑immigrant sentiment. The statement also warns that extremist, racist, and exclusionary forces worldwide have historically hijacked anti‑immigration movements to sow division and weaken social cohesion. South Africa must guard against such tactics and uphold its commitment to human dignity, equality, and rights.

Concerns About the March
The announcement comes amid rising anxiety over a June 30 protest against illegal immigration organised by the civic group March and March. Although organisers insist the demonstration will be peaceful, fears of possible violence have prompted the authorities to earmark R600 million for security operations aimed at preserving public safety.

Government Response and Security

Municipality’s Decision
The eThekwini Municipality has declined to grant permission for the planned march, adding to the tension surrounding the event. Despite the refusal, march organisers have vowed to proceed with the protest regardless of the lack of official approval.

Organizers’ Stance
Leaders of March and March maintain that their gathering will be peaceful and argue that the security budget is an overreaction. They encourage participants to follow the law and avoid any confrontations.

Looking Ahead
As the date approaches, community leaders, faith groups, and authorities are urging dialogue and restraint. The Muslim coalition’s appeal highlights the need for a united front against hatred while addressing the legitimate grievances that underlie social tension. By focusing on education, economic opportunity, and mutual respect, South Africa can work toward a safer, more inclusive future for all its residents.
