Fally Ipupa marks 20 Years of Solo Career with Historic Stade de France Show [Interview]

Fally Ipupa: Two Decades of Rhythm, Risk, and Record-Breaking Success

For over twenty years, the Congolese artist Fally Ipupa has been a towering figure in African music, a singer, songwriter, and dancer whose influence extends far beyond the borders of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Known by epithets like “the Eagle,” “Di Caprio,” and “El Profesor,” Ipupa is celebrating a monumental milestone: 20 years of his solo career. This anniversary is marked by the release of his eighth studio album, XX, and a historic twin-concert residency at Paris’s Stade de France—a first for a French-speaking African artist.

A Vision Forged in Kinshasa

Ipupa’s journey began in earnest in 2006 when he departed the renowned band Quartier Latin International to launch his solo project, Droit Chemin. Reflecting on that pivotal moment, he acknowledges a clear, long-term vision but humbly admits the scale of his success surpassed his initial expectations.

“Long, maybe, but not this successful,” he says in an interview. “Still, I had the vision of becoming a serious artist.” For Ipupa, this stature was never accidental. It was built on relentless work and artistic discipline. “I work for it. In a way, I feel it’s deserved. But it’s always a pleasure,” he explains, framing his achievements as a conscious, earned process.

The Eighth Chapter: Album XX and Artistic Evolution

To commemorate two decades, Ipupa is releasing XX in two parts. The first arrives on April 17, 2024, with the second following on June 10—exactly 20 years after his debut. The album is a deliberate celebration of his journey and a showcase of his collaborative spirit.

His methodology has always involved pushing boundaries. The lead single, “Cinéma,” has sparked discussion for its bold, unconventional sound. Ipupa embraces this reaction as part of the creative process. “An artist has to take risks before releasing and presenting projects. For me, that’s not a problem at all,” he states. This willingness to experiment, even at the risk of controversy, is a hallmark of his sustained relevance.

A Cross-Continental Collaborator

Ipupa’s discography is a map of modern African and Francophone music, featuring a who’s who of international stars. His collaborative ethos breaks down genre and geographic barriers, merging Congolese rumba with French hip-hop, Afrobeat, and pop.

The XX project continues this tradition with an extensive list of featured artists, demonstrating his peer respect and network:

  • Guy2Bezbar & Joé Dwèt Filé (French rap/urban)
  • Angélique Kidjo (Beninese music icon, Grammy winner)
  • Lokua Kanza (Congolese singer-songwriter)
  • Trésor (Congolese-French singer)
  • Wizkid (Nigerian Afrobeats superstar)
  • Calema (São Toméan Kizomba duo)

“This time, we have a completely different vision,” Ipupa notes. “The first part is more urban, and overall, the project is really about celebrating these 20 years.” This strategy of fusion has been key to his cross-generational appeal.

Stade de France: A Historic Achievement

The centerpiece of the 20-year celebration is a pair of concerts at the Stade de France on May 2 and 3, 2024. The demand was staggering: approximately 70,000 tickets for the first show sold out rapidly, necessitating the second date. This feat cements Ipupa’s status as a continental powerhouse.

He promises an experience that transcends a typical concert. “We’re planning a very, very big celebration. Two days in a row, with different shows, unique experiences,” he says. Importantly, he frames the event as inclusive: “It’s not just for the ‘warriors.’ There will be fans, of course, but also people who simply love music, even those who’ve never been to a concert before.”

While often hailed as a cultural ambassador, Ipupa offers a nuanced self-assessment. “I’m not officially an ambassador, but I am someone who defends and promotes Congolese culture and African music in general,” he clarifies. The Stade de France shows, in this light, symbolize both personal triumph and the global reach of African musical forms.

Beyond Music: Stepping onto the Screen

Ipupa’s creative expansion now includes cinema. He recently starred in Rumba Royale, a film set in the Belgian Congo era that weaves the history of rumba into its narrative. This role represents a natural evolution for an artist deeply connected to his musical roots.

“It’s something I’ve loved for a long time,” he shares. “This was my first leading role in cinema, and it was a great experience. I learned a lot and there’s more to come.” This move into acting further demonstrates his multidisciplinary ambition and desire to explore new storytelling avenues.

The Invitation: A Shared Celebration

At its heart, Ipupa’s 20-year milestone is an invitation. “This is an unmissable event,” he declares. “May 2 and 3 at the Stade de France: the best concert in history. Come and experience it.” His message is clear: this is not merely a retrospective for die-hard fans, but a vibrant, communal celebration of music, culture, and two decades of an artist who has consistently reinvented himself while staying rooted in his heritage.

For Fally Ipupa, the path forward is built on the pillars of the past: hard work, calculated risk, and an unbreakable connection to the rhythms that define him.
