Police and Private Security Team Up to Catch Mall Robbers

The Heist at Goldfields Mall

On a Wednesday evening around 7:45 p.m., a group of armed suspects burst into two clothing stores inside Goldfields Mall in Welkom. They smashed displays, grabbed luxury items such as designer clothes, high‑end watches, and expensive perfumes, and then fled with goods worth about R900 000.

What Happened Inside the Mall

The robbers moved quickly, ransacking the stores before anyone could react. Shoppers and staff were startled, but no one was hurt during the initial break‑in.

Chase and Shootout

Private security guards were the first to notice the crime. They jumped into their vehicles and started a high‑speed pursuit as the suspects split into several getaway cars.

Exchange of Fire

During the chase, the suspects opened fire on the security teams. The guards returned fire, but fortunately nobody was injured or killed.

Multi‑Provincial Manhunt

After the shootout, the suspects scattered in different directions, heading toward neighboring provinces. This triggered a coordinated effort that involved police units from Welkom, Orkney, Stilfontein, and Villiers.

First Arrests Near Welkom

Between Welkom and Odendaalsrus, officers stopped a white Kia Sportage and a white Nissan NP300 bakkie. Four suspects were taken into custody, and a large amount of the stolen stock was recovered from the vehicles.

Intercepting the Minibus in Orkney and Stilfontein

A tip‑off led police to a white Toyota Quantum minibus carrying nine more suspects. Inside the vehicle, officers found four firearms and ammunition, which will be sent for ballistic testing to see if they were used in other crimes.

Final Arrests in Villiers

Officers also stopped a blue Hyundai i20 in Villiers, where the remaining three suspects were apprehended.

Arrests and Charges

All 16 suspects, ranging in age from 20 to 44, are now in police custody. They face charges of business robbery and possession of suspected stolen property. They are expected to appear soon at the Welkom Magistrate’s Court.

Why This Operation Matters

The success of the mission shows how teamwork between the South African Police Service (SAPS) and private security can stop fast‑moving criminal groups that cross provincial borders. By sharing information and acting quickly, law‑enforcement was able to recover most of the stolen goods, seize weapons, and put the alleged robbers behind bars.

Conclusion

The bold robbery at Goldfields Mall ended with a swift, cross‑provincial response that led to the arrest of 16 suspects. No one was hurt during the chase or shootout, and the recovered items and firearms are now part of the investigation. This case highlights the power of cooperation between police and private security in keeping communities safe.
