Cairo’s historic Sultan Qaytbay Mosque Mausoleum reopens

Date:

Reopening of the Qaytbay Mosque‑Mausoleum in Cairo

On Monday, Egyptian officials, U.S. diplomats and heritage specialists gathered for the official reopening of the Mausoleum of Sultan al‑Ashraf Qaytbay, a landmark attached to the Qaytbay Mosque in historic Cairo. The ceremony was attended by Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathy, Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy Robert Silverman, and Agnieszka Dobrowolska, founder of the Cairo‑based firm Archinos Architecture, which led the restoration effort.

Scope of the Restoration Work

The project, carried out from October 2022 to November 2024, focused on stabilizing the monument’s fabric while revealing its original artistic details.

  • Masonry repairs: Cracked stone blocks in the external walls and the dome were repointed using compatible lime‑based mortar.
  • Dome consolidation: Structural engineers reinforced the dome’s wooden ribbing and replaced deteriorated lead flashing.
  • Surface cleaning: A gentle, pH‑neutral cleaning process removed centuries of soot and grime, uncovering the original ablaq (alternating light‑dark stone) patterns and faded polychrome frescoes.
  • Interior conservation: Wooden mashrabiya screens and stucco calligraphy were cleaned, consolidated, and where necessary, re‑carved by master craftsmen using traditional techniques.

According to the technical report released by Archinos Architecture, the intervention preserved 85 % of the original masonry and restored 70 % of the visible decorative elements to their 15th‑century appearance.

Funding and International Partnership

The restoration was made possible through a grant from the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP), awarded to Archinos Architecture in August 2022. The fund, administered by the U.S. Department of State, supports projects that safeguard cultural heritage worldwide.

Additional support came from the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, which provided supervisory oversight and facilitated access to the site for academic researchers from the American University in Cairo and the Institut Français d’Archéologie orientale.

Historical Context of the Qaytbay Complex

The Mausoleum of Sultan al‑Ashraf Qaytbay forms part of a larger religious complex completed in 1474 CE during the reign of the Mamluk Sultanate. Sultan Qaytbay (r. 1468‑1496) was renowned for his patronage of architecture, commissioning numerous mosques, madrasas and funerary monuments across Egypt and the Levant.

The complex exemplifies the ablaq stone technique and intricate stone carving that characterize late Mamluk architecture. Its dome, one of the earliest examples of a stone‑ribbed dome in Cairo, influenced later Ottoman and Mamluk Revival designs.

UNESCO recognizes the historic Cairo district, which includes the Qaytbay Mosque‑Mausoleum, as part of the “Historic Cairo” World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1979 for its outstanding universal value as a centre of Islamic art, learning and urban planning.

Looking Ahead

With the restoration complete, the site will resume regular visitor access and host educational programs aimed at both tourists and local communities. The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities plans to integrate the monument into new cultural‑tourism routes that highlight Cairo’s medieval Islamic heritage.

Experts involved in the project emphasize that ongoing maintenance will be essential. A five‑year monitoring schedule, developed jointly by Archinos Architecture and the Ministry’s Conservation Department, includes biannual inspections of the dome’s structural integrity and periodic cleaning of the interior surfaces.

The reopening of the Qaytbay Mosque‑Mausoleum stands as a testament to successful collaboration between Egyptian authorities, international partners, and skilled conservators—showcasing how careful stewardship can revive centuries‑old monuments for future generations.
