The Epic Ride from Norway to South Africa

Planning the Adventure

Annabelle Golden and Alex Ohtea spent months preparing for a journey that would test their endurance, navigation skills, and teamwork. They mapped out a route that would take them from the Arctic fjords of Tromsø, Norway, all the way to the vibrant streets of Cape Town, South Africa. Their gear list focused on lightweight camping equipment, reliable bike parts, and plenty of snacks for long stretches between towns.

The Route Across Europe

Starting in Tromsø, the couple pedaled south through Sweden, Finland, and the Baltic states, then crossed into Germany, France, and Spain. Riding along scenic coastlines and bustling cities, they covered roughly 8,000 kilometers before reaching the southern tip of Spain. The European leg offered a mix of mild weather, well‑marked bike paths, and chances to sample local cuisine.

Into Africa: Countries Crossed

From Spain, a short ferry hop brought them to Morocco, where the real African adventure began. Their route wound through:

  • Mauritania
  • Gambia
  • Senegal
  • Guinea‑Bissau
  • Sierra Leone
  • Ivory Coast
  • Ghana
  • Nigeria
  • Cameroon
  • Republic of Congo
  • Angola
  • Namibia
  • South Africa

In total, they visited 27 countries, experiencing everything from desert dunes to tropical rainforests.

Challenges on the Road

The journey was far from easy. They faced:

  • Sahara heat – endless stretches of sand and scorching temperatures tested their water supplies.
  • Rainy season jungles – muddy trails in Sierra Leone and the Congolese rainforest made progress slow and slippery.
  • Mechanical breakdowns – broken chains and flat tires in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Angola required improvised repairs with limited tools.
  • Namib Desert crossing – a final, grueling push through one of the world’s oldest deserts before the last leg into South Africa.

Despite these obstacles, the pair kept their spirits high, relying on each other’s encouragement and the kindness of strangers they met along the way.

Celebrating the Finish

Arriving at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront on July 19, Golden and Ohtea were greeted by Golden’s parents, who were visiting South Africa. The sight of Table Mountain on the horizon made the achievement feel surreal. Alex recalled watching the distance markers tick down and realizing the journey was truly ending. Annabelle described the moment as “pretty unreal,” expressing gratitude to everyone who followed their trek on TikTok and offered support.

What’s Next?

After a month of rest and exploration in Cape Town, the duo plans to set their sights on new horizons. With plenty of the world still unexplored by bike, they hint at future adventures that could take them across other continents or back through familiar routes with fresh challenges.

Conclusion

Annabelle Golden and Alex Ohtea’s 797‑day, 25,315‑kilometer ride from Norway to South Africa stands as a testament to perseverance, curiosity, and the power of sharing a dream. Their story inspires teens everywhere to consider that with preparation, teamwork, and a willingness to embrace the unknown, even the most ambitious goals can become reality.
