H1: Durban High Court Case: Five Men Charged in 2020 Police Killings
H2: Who Were the Victims?
- Thamsanqa Gcabashe – ANC Youth League secretary, appointed in February 2020.
- Lindokuhle Madonsela – Durban Metropolitan Police officer and ANC member.
- Ndumiso Thosei – Fellow metro police officer.
All three lived in Ward 191, Hammarsdale, under the Mpumalanga Municipality.
H2: The Accused
- Fana Shabalala
- Thulani Shozi
- Zamokuhle Mnyandu
- Sandile Msezane
- Ntando Blose
Prosecutors say they were hired as contract killers to eliminate Madonsela.
H3: How the Mistake Happened
The hit‑team allegedly confused Gcabashe’s identity with Madonsela’s. On May 25, 2020 they went to Gcabashe’s house and shot him, believing he was their target.
H3: The Second Attack
Realising the error, the group planned to kill Madonsela. Two weeks later, on June 9, 2020:
- Thosei arrived in a silver Kia Rio to pick up Madonsela for work.
- Madonsela got into the car; the Kia waited outside.
- A Toyota Etios pulled up beside the stationary vehicle.
- Occupants of the Etios opened fire, striking Bothos and Madonsela.
The indictment notes:
- Thosei died instantly from a head wound.
- Madonsela suffered multiple gunshot wounds to various organs and died at the scene.
H2: Alleged Roles of the Defendants
- Thulani Shozi – Supposedly tracked Madonsela’s movements and relayed that information to the team.
- Fana Shabalala, Zamokuhle Mnyandu, Sandile Msezane, Ntando Blose – Allegedly the shooters who carried out the killings.
H2: Court Developments
- The case was postponed to May 7 to allow new counsel X Ntshulana (representing Shabalala, Shozi, and Msezane) to review the file.
- Siya Hlongwane represents Msezane and Blose.
- Except for Blose, all five defendants are currently free on bail.
- Trial dates are set from May 19 to June 19.
H2: What This Means for the Community
The killings shocked Hammarsdale and highlighted concerns about contract violence targeting public officials and ANC members. A fair trial is seen as crucial for restoring trust in the justice system and sending a clear message that such crimes will not be tolerated.
H2: Conclusion
As the Durban High Court prepares to hear evidence in early May, the case against the five accused men will examine whether a tragic case of mistaken identity led to the loss of three lives. The outcome will not only determine the fate of the defendants but also serve as a reminder of the importance of protecting those who serve their communities. Stay tuned for updates as the trial unfolds.
