What Happened?

Early Saturday morning, around 4 a.m., a driver in a Golf 7 GTI sped the wrong way on the northbound lane of the N3 highway between the Bisley and Ntaba Ridge exits near Pietermaritzburg. The vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic, putting other road users at serious risk.

Police Intervention

Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) officers spotted the dangerous maneuver and moved in to stop the car. Despite the driver’s aggressive behavior, the officers—including a female officer previously praised for bravery in a similar incident—managed to halt the vehicle and make an arrest.

What Was Found?

During the stop, police discovered a firearm loaded with 49 rounds of ammunition and two extra magazines in the car. The weapon was seized for further examination.

Charges Against the Driver

The motorist now faces several charges, including:

  • Driving into oncoming traffic (violating the National Highway Code)
  • Reckless and negligent driving on a public road
  • Crossing a barrier line
  • Failing to obey an officer’s command
  • Resisting arrest
  • Not disclosing possession of a firearm

Next Steps

The seized firearm will undergo forensic ballistic testing through the Integrated Ballistic Identification System (IBIS) to see if it has been linked to any previous crimes. The case will proceed through the courts, where the driver will answer for the alleged offenses.

Conclusion

This incident highlights the dangers of reckless driving and the quick response of law‑enforcement officers to protect public safety. It also reminds drivers that carrying firearms without proper authorization can lead to serious legal consequences. Staying alert, following traffic rules, and cooperating with police help keep roads safe for everyone.
