Aguirre played down the milestone after Mexico reached the top group of the World Cup with South Korea’s win

Mexico Coach Javier Aguirre Downplays Early Lead, Focuses on Tournament Success

Mexico’s head coach Javier Aguirre played down the significance of his team’s 1‑0 victory over South Korea, which gave El Tri the top spot in Group A and secured a place in the knockout stage for the first time since 2002. Speaking to reporters after the match in Guadalajara, Aguirre called the statistic “anecdotal” and stressed that the true measure of success will be determined later in the tournament.

“I didn’t know that statistic,” Aguirre said. “It’s anecdotal. It was anecdotal in 2002 and it’s anecdotal now because what matters in the end is the final position.”

The win, sealed by a second‑half goal from Luis Romo after a costly error by South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung‑gyu, leaves Mexico with six points and guarantees at least one knockout‑round match in Mexico City. Aguirre highlighted the advantage of playing on home soil, describing the “Mexico factor” as “priceless” and extremely important for the squad’s confidence.

Learning from Early Nervousness

Although Mexico looked shaky in their opening 2‑0 win over Bafana Bafana, Aguirre noted that the team absorbed valuable lessons from that encounter. “Today we learned from our mistakes. We weren’t spectacular, but we played a good game. That shows the maturity of the team. We were much more patient,” he explained.

When asked what distinguishes this squad from previous Mexican sides he has coached, the 67‑year‑old smiled and replied, “[This team] has a calmer coach.”

Keeping Expectations in Check

Aguirre said he intends to keep expectations restrained ahead of the final group match against the Czech Republic, while still instilling belief that Mexico can achieve a historic result. “I want to convince my players that we can make it into the top 10 in the world. That would be something very special for us,” he added.

Canada’s Dominant Win Over Qatar

In another Group B fixture, Canada recorded a 6‑0 victory over nine‑man Qatar, with Jonathan David completing a hat‑trix. The win lifted Canada to the top of the group on goal difference, level with Switzerland on four points. Canadian midfielder Ismael Kone was shown a red card after an inflatable red shoe was placed on his leg following a foul, reducing Qatar to nine players for the remainder of the match.

The result means Canada will face Switzerland in Vancouver on June 24, while Qatar will meet Bosnia and Herzegovina in Seattle.

Switzerland Takes Control of Group B

Switzerland secured a 4‑1 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina, thanks to a second‑half brace from substitute Johan Manzambi and a penalty from captain Granit Xhaka. The victory puts the Swiss in a strong position to advance as group winners or runners‑up, pending their final group game against Canada.

Bosnia, with only one point, will now play Qatar in Seattle.

Looking Ahead

Mexico will meet the Czech Republic at Estadio Azteca on Wednesday, aiming to build on their home‑advantage momentum. Meanwhile, South Korea will face South Africa in Monterrey with three points, still alive for a possible third‑place finish in the group.
