What’s Going On with Senzo Mchunu?
Who Is Senzo Mchunu?
Senzo Mchunu is a senior member of the African National Congress (ANC) and serves as the Police Minister. He also sits on the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).
Why Was He Put on Leave?
In July 2024, KwaZulu‑Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant‑General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi accused Mchunu of:
- Ordering the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) on 31 December 2024 without consulting national police leaders.
- Doing this to shield politically connected people.
- Possibly working with a Gauteng drug cartel that influenced his decision.
These claims led to Mchunu being placed on special leave while investigations continued.
What Did Mchunu Say in His Defence?
Mchunu appeared before:
- Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee
- The Madlanga Commission
During both hearings he repeatedly denied:
- Being influenced by a drug cartel.
- Disbanding the PKTT to protect any individuals or criminal groups.
He argued that his testimony cleared his name.
A Brief Return to Politics
After the hearings, Mchunu:
- Wrote a courtesy note to ANC Secretary‑General Fikile Mbalula’s office about his return.
- Delivered a eulogy at the funeral of ANC member Bhekabathethwa Mthethwa in Richards Bay.
He said his letter was just a courtesy, not a formal request to resume duties.
The ANC’s Response
The ANC’s leadership, through a letter from Mbalula, told Mchunu that:
- His voluntary step‑aside needed approval from the party’s senior leaders to be reversed.
- He must first make representations to the ANC Integrity Commission and national officials.
- Only after those bodies review his case and make recommendations can the NEC decide if he can return.
Ongoing Investigations
Both the Madlanga Commission and Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee have not finished their work. The Madlanga Commission’s term has been extended to August, with a possible further extension. Because of this, Mchunu may not be able to campaign for the ANC in the upcoming local government elections.
What Happens Next?
Mchunu’s spokesperson, Sithembiso Mshengu, said they are still waiting for the ANC to tell him when he can resume his NEC duties. Until the party’s internal processes and the external commissions conclude, his political activities remain on hold.
Conclusion
Senzo Mchunu’s situation shows how allegations, official inquiries, and party rules can intertwine to pause a politician’s career. While he maintains his innocence and has tried to re‑engage with ANC activities, the final say rests with the party’s leadership and the ongoing investigations. For now, he remains on special leave, waiting for a clear path forward.
